Dave S Papa Luna is an odd movie, to say the least, as it swings from comedy to drama to romance to strange mysticism without skipping a beat, sometimes with great success and sometimes, well…not so much. Chulpan Khamatova is fantastic as Mamlakat, a teenage girl living in a remote village who dreams of being an actress. When she becomes pregnant as the result of an odd encounter with a member of a visiting theatrical company, her father and disabled brother take her on a journey to find the guilty party in order to restore her reputation. Despite the fact that the film sometimes slips into silly and unnecessary slapstick and many of the secondary roles are just too over the top, Khamatova holds things together with her subtle charm and endearing naivete. The cinematography and locales are striking and the film is worth watching as long as the negative aspects can be ignored. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review christina c Saw this film a while back by myself. The cinematography is just stunning, with sweeping desert landscapes, a fully recreated Tajik village, and a beautiful waterway. The music is perfect for the film, and the humour is both understated and very appropriate. But the best part of this film is, by far, the acting. This film boasts an excellent international cast. Khamatova is the lead character Mamlakat is both vibrant and innocent. Mukhamedzhanov as Safar, is perfect in the role of the loving, devoted father who will do anything for his children. And finally, Bleibtreu as Nasreddin steals any scene he's in. The performance he gives is simply brilliant, with a touch of slapstick, a an excellent display of physical control since his character is a man suffering from brain damage as a result of being a soldier wounded in battle. His character manages to be a host of paradoxes...sweet, yet strong, only able to say a few words yet more wise than those who are fully capable, childlike, yet manly. I cannot say enough about this character or Bleibtreu's performance with him. I would fully recommend this film to anyone who likes a good story, who wants something a bit different from the same old Hollywood fluff, and for anyone who wishes to see excellent actors giving excellent performances. For anyone who's curious, this viewer is firm...watch this film. You won't be disappointed. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member beautiful! lovely movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A delicate cinematography with a bit of humour and fantasy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member such a special beautiful movie!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Luna Papa tells the sotry of a teenage girl named Mamlakat (Khamatova) who loves theater. One night, missing the latest performance of the theater company, she ends up in the bushes under the moonlight with a mystery man. When she finally realizes she's pregnant and tells her father, they alongside her mentally-disabled brother go on to look for the father. What would actually be a very dramatic situation, ends up being kind of a magical and very charming story - with voice-overs from the unborn baby -with some high tension moments, but with loads of humor. If information on line is correct, Chulpan Khamatova is 20-something while shooting this movie, but she actually looks like a teen. Amazing. Watch out from falling cows.
