Critics Consensus

Stylish but hollow, Lux Æterna represents a frustrating regression for writer-director Gaspar Noé.

Jordan If youre familiar with Gaspars films, youll know what to expect. This 52 minute film follows a similar path of its predecessor Climax in terms of flow. Slow beginning, then a fast paced remainder. Once it ends, its up to you as the viewer to determine if there was a lot to unpack, or if its just art at its most pretentious. I fall in the category of the former. I look forward to seeing Vortex next! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/30/22 Full Review angel l A completely immersive experience. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/22 Full Review Luis The best headache Ive ever experienced. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/22 Full Review Charles S My eyes are also burning, the finale just keeps going. Seems like one of the many movies about making movies that I don't get the appeal of, but this had a few interesting ideas Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Audience Member Qu’est-ce que c’était ça ?!? I’ll have to watch it again sometime, after my head stops hurting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review favio c Se siente como un collage de la cinematografia de Gaspar en donde el concepto es el Arte. Con algunos elementos intencionados que hace digerible los 50 minutos. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Anton Bitel Little White Lies this “dream-like movie”, shot metacinematically behind the scenes, exposes the ugliness of a set, and of society, while also finding room in its ultimate, flickering apocalypse for a peak moment of multi-hued rapture. Jun 6, 2022 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It works in some ways -- there's a sensory attack to this film. May 21, 2022 Full Review Jeremy Smith AV Club Knowing how dazzling Noé can be when he’s fully engaged on a full-length movie could’ve left Lux Æterna feeling like a bit of a letdown, but it’s a freaking Yves Saint Laurent advert! Rated: B- May 20, 2022 Full Review Hector A. Gonzalez Loud and Clear Reviews Although it may seem like a gimmick at times, for the most part Gaspar Noé’s Lux Æterna engages and entrances with its split-screen techniques and bad-acid trip neon stylistic tendencies. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 24, 2024 Full Review Jonathan DeHaan Nightmare on Film Street In true Noé fashion, Lux Æterna is a f*cking trip. Love him or hate him, there is no other director like Gaspar Noé, and any opportunity to experience his unique brand of creative insanity is a sacrament I happily receive. Rated: 9/10 Nov 2, 2022 Full Review Pete Vonder Haar Houston Press But "transgressive" doesn't always translate to "interesting." For those thinking Noé may have turned a corner with 2018's Climax, Lux Æterna represents an unfortunate step back. Rated: 1.5/5 Sep 16, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
