dustin d Lying to Mom (Suzuki-ke no uso) is a "dramedy" in which a family's tragedy is addressed with the narrative beats of a comedy. The laughs flow naturally from the story, or come in the form of recognizing certain behaviors or personalities that are distinctly Japanese. While it parodies Japanese society, it is not mean-spirited. The premise is similar to Good Bye Lenin! in that a mother's family lies to her after she comes out of a coma to protect her from knowing something that happened while she was under that would potentially destroy her. However, Good Bye Lenin! is a bit odd in that the characters recreate a fictional version of a world no one would mourn (East Germany). Lying to Mom is a bit more understandable in its intention. It has enough emotional variety to sustain its 133-minute runtime. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
