In this Shakespearean classic, Macbeth (Maurice Evans), urged on by his power-hungry wife (Judith Anderson), murders Duncan (Malcolm Keen), the king of Scotland. Casting the blame upon the guards, Macbeth becomes the new king, and shortly has his friend and potential rival, Banquo (Michael Hordern), assassinated. As Macbeth grows increasingly paranoid and bloodthirsty in his determination to retain power, his suspicious fellow warrior, Macduff (Ian Bannen), becomes driven to unseat him.

Audience Member I didn't really understand what was going on, nor didn't know the story of Macbeth, but after reading up on it I'm getting to know it. There was nothing off in this beauty of a film, I just didn't understand what was going on. 5 anyway as you can see. It seems to desreve that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A DVD I have of classic movies contains a poor quality transfer of this TV movie. It is somewhat shortened from Shakespeare's original script at about an hour and fifteen minutes without commercials. Sean Connery is not bad as Macbeth, who is pushed along to ambition by his wife. He is not flashy despite quite a bit of narration that tries to put you in his head, but neither does he command your full attention. The action is restricted to an expressionist inspired set. While the set looks cool as do the scenes in silhouette, it feels cramped. Potential special effects such as the dagger and the forest advancing on the castle are non-existent. The ghost of Banquo's appearance is done as low tech as possible. Mainly of interest for the rare (pre-Bond) performance by Connery. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
