Chenry A great western worth the watch 100% Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Well, old Roy, Rogers went out with a bang because this one was really really really good. Yes I highly recommend it James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas, August 14, 2023. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/13/23 Full Review John P The late 60's/ early 70's began to signal the waning years of the classic westerns; while John Wayne had some of his better films in the late 60's, the advent of the "spaghetti western" (with Clint Eastwood and other actors) began portraying a different type of cowboy: more brutal, bloody and less clearly defined as a hero or villain. Mackintosh and T.J. is not that type of movie. In his last film role, Roy Rogers plays Mackintosh, an aging cowboy and ranch hand who roams from one place to the next in his barely-functional blue pick-up truck, working where and when he can. As the story opens, he happens upon T.J. at a general store, a young teen having been released from a work detail not too long ago. T.J. steals some food, but Mackintosh pays for it and covers for the young man, later giving him a lift. As the movie progresses, Mackintosh and T.J. encounter several situations where Mackintosh has to intervene for the youngster; one is at a bar where T.J. had gone to after Mackintosh's truck broke down and the boy catches a ride with another driver, only to be weirded out and having to get out near the bar and get work to continue his journey. At that bar, T.J. is accused of stealing a patron's money and Mackintosh ends up fighting on T.J.'s behalf, only for the truth that the man's money had simply fallen under the table to emerge. The pair next find themselves at a ranch where both find work. T.J.'s dream is to see the Pacific Ocean, and both he and Mackintosh discover they have much in common. In the end, after a particularly nasty spat at the ranch that ends with the death of two men (one killed the other for which Mackintosh was blamed, then the man later committed suicide), Mackintosh and T.J. head out of the ranch and travel towards the Pacific Ocean. Personally, I think this is one of Roy's better movies; while there is blood, it is not gore and certainly not the horrific shootouts of movies like Westworld or Fistful of Dollars. Roy carries himself as a classic cowboy with all the mannerisms, but not particularly over the top like in the older westerns of yesteryear. The role was written specifically for him, and he does a very good job in it. While not the most exciting of western movies (more a "modern" western than anything), what it does, it does very well. Clay O'Brien (who would later leave acting to become a full-time roper in the rodeo circuit) has a charm all his own as T.J., a runaway who looks up to Mackintosh as something of a father figure. I recommend this movie for a night when you want something to get into, but aren't looking for "the meaning of life"; it's enough to hold your attention and does a good job of portraying a man whose day in the sun is drawing to a close meeting a young teen who has yet to see what life truly is.
