Michael S Easily the worst movie with the best cast. I mean the cast is incredible. And the basic premise (gangsters trying to knock each other off for control) should work. But... wow. The movie makes NO sense. The dialogue is so bad you wince. Most of the acting is terrible. One of those turkeys you watch once to experience the awfulness, then never watch it again. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Audience Member I loved this dumb movie more than I can express. The slick visual appeal of a 70s gangster film, the swaggeriest swagger to ever swagger that Goldblum employs to the effect that only he can, Gabriel Byrne absolutely chewing up the scenery in every shot he is in, Richard Dreyfus reveling in the silliness of everything happening around his character, the constant cameos, the copious F-bombs. All of it. It's not meant to watch for any reason other than "this shit's cool". It's a hipsters paradise, and my god, does it know it. Every second of this movie is a wink at the audience of "I know, this is silly, but lets have fun, yeah?" Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member sexy actors xoxo entertaining …. Sherise 💋 ;) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member How did such a good cast end up in such a terrible film? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Totally underrated movie; copied by other movies like Snatch and Lock,Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels that were the same type but the copies got better reviews. Would watch again numerous times. Great actors like these didn't do many films together... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member If you like Larry Bishop films, you'll like this. His movies have a distinct flavour about them that either works for you or doesn't. Personally I find it refreshing - the movies don't have that smug production polish that the MCU is churning out...they feel more grindhouse-esque, like early Robert Rodriguez. They make their own rules, they don't follow a formula, they are their own masters. Personally, I like anything with Jeff Goldblum in it, especially when he's playing something other than his standard Jewish Hugh Grant role. Everyone in this is amazing. Gabriel Byrne is brilliant as Bubba Ben London. Dreyfuss as the enigmatic and dangerous Vic. Barkin as the voracious Rita. Even Bishop is brilliantly over the top. I don't think of this as a gangster movie however. It's rooted in the world of nightclubs and gangsters, but it's limited to only a couple of sets, so don't go in thinking street battles with tommy guns out of Packard saloons. It's all about the characters, the dialogue, and the music. Thanks Larry, this is sublime. Take that 17% from the enlightened critic overlords as an endorsement.
