Bruce McCabe Boston Globe If punk is a sensibility as well as an adjective, Mad Max is a punk movie. Its Australian setting enhances it, authenticating its futuristic aura. Apr 27, 2018 Full Review Richard Corliss TIME Magazine [The] film has been consigned to the grind houses, where audiences are responding as Miller wants them to. From there Mad Max will find its way to the film schools and revival houses, where its tough-gutted intelligence may be appreciated. May 11, 2015 Full Review Empire Magazine Simple, but effective. Rated: 4/5 May 30, 2007 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast A low-budget achievement and an impressive, flashy debut by George Miller. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Jun 1, 2024 Full Review Akhil Arora AkhilArora.com At times more horror than action, the Mad Max movie that started it all is quite sinister. The editing style, the sound effects, the background score, and the shot composition are all testament to that. May 31, 2024 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The first film in the franchise was a low-budget triumph that established Miller as a meaningful force in global cinema. James Probably the best Mad Max movie in the series. The best, most developed villains in the series for sure. In fact The Toecutter is one of the best all-time villains in cinema. So great to see this classic movie on the big screen. I hope the Gateway will also show The Road Warrior too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review Alexander S Although it’s a low-budget start for its era, Mad Max delivers a decent beginning for its apocalyptic premise. However, if you’re already familiar with the series, as I was, this film will feel a bit monotonous during its slow start to an adrenaline-pumping franchise. Eventually, you’ll be rewarded for your patience. Grading: C Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Dominic T Low Budget but great action movie. I remember watching this for the first time in the early 80's and had no clue about the road warrior movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Josh D Went in expecting an apocalyptic story and instead got one part leather cops and one part Australian Punisher. But the fact that I expected one thing and got another is not why I didn’t love this movie. It’s because for must of the movie I was completely in the dark on what’s going on. The first 30-40 minutes of the movie set the scene. Or, that feels like what they’re trying to do, but very little is actually set up. There’s almost no exposition given, the dialogue is hard to follow (not sure if that’s a writing issue or I just don’t understand Australian lingo), and very little context is shown. The only thing the intro does do effectively is introduce our main character, Max. After that, the movie finally gets me to start caring by showing me Max’s home life and his struggle to be happy. From there, the movie had a pretty solid story, my only issues being the lack of a compelling antagonist and some iffy dialogue. The movie really hits its stride with just 17 minutes to go, which really just made me wish we had gotten to that point sooner. I felt like the movie would have been better without all the police work at the beginning and if we had instead just focused on Max, his family, and his revenge. Overall, there was a lot I didn’t love and some stuff I did like, but ultimately I could have scratched the same itch by watching or reading The Punisher and saved myself the headache. That said, I know that this is not the movie the franchise is known for and I am very excited to see what’s to come. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Kevin P A surprisingly grounded and lowkey first entry into the infamously batshit crazy post-apocalyptic franchise. While the soundtrack is dated and some of the slower scenes show their age, the stunt work and car chase choreography is still very impressive for the time and the setting is pretty interesting in retrospect with a barely functioning world on the brink of the leather-bound nightrider apocalypse that would take over for the world (or what’s left of it) for the rest of the series. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Greg D Does not hold up very well in my opinion. Also crazy what the series would inevitably become, given this is the starting point.
