Bruce McCabe Boston Globe If punk is a sensibility as well as an adjective, Mad Max is a punk movie. Its Australian setting enhances it, authenticating its futuristic aura. Apr 27, 2018 Full Review Richard Corliss TIME Magazine [The] film has been consigned to the grind houses, where audiences are responding as Miller wants them to. From there Mad Max will find its way to the film schools and revival houses, where its tough-gutted intelligence may be appreciated. May 11, 2015 Full Review Empire Magazine Simple, but effective. Rated: 4/5 May 30, 2007 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast A low-budget achievement and an impressive, flashy debut by George Miller. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Jun 1, 2024 Full Review Akhil Arora AkhilArora.com At times more horror than action, the Mad Max movie that started it all is quite sinister. The editing style, the sound effects, the background score, and the shot composition are all testament to that. May 31, 2024 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The first film in the franchise was a low-budget triumph that established Miller as a meaningful force in global cinema. James Probably the best Mad Max movie in the series. The best, most developed villains in the series for sure. In fact The Toecutter is one of the best all-time villains in cinema. So great to see this classic movie on the big screen. I hope the Gateway will also show The Road Warrior too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review Daniel C. M This a movie you can only truly appreciate on it's second viewing. A lot of runtime is eaten up by unnecessary scenes that drag too much of the villains doing typical and cheesy villain stuff, obviously an consequence of it's low budget. Though if you can get by that, you will see amazing and genuine vehicle action that is supported by the powerhouse that is Mel Gibson. The worldbuilding is very fine though, one of the first, if not the first, truly pre-apocalyptic movies there is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Jay W I love the low budget passion projects that end up taking off and becoming successes. Stuff like, "Rocky", "Evil Dead", "Police Story" and "Mad Max" all have a unique charm that no big budget Hollywood picture can duplicate. Seeing the hard work of the filmmakers pay off is a satisfying experience, it's capitalism at its finest. It's living the American Dream, or in this case, Australian Dream. "Mad Max" came out in 1979 and was made on an estimated budget of $350,000. The franchise would go on to make 4 films and gross over half a million dollars. Most will say that the 4th film of the franchise, "Fury Road" is the best. Where the 4th one is the most polished and well-done of this series, there is a charm to the original that can't be matched. And, if this film was just the last 40 minutes if this movie, this would be the best of the franchise. If you are watching this movie, wondering how this became such a big hit, be patient, the movie hits its stride at the halfway mark. Honestly, you could ignore the whole first hour of this movie, and there is enough self-contained story in the ending to make it worth your while. All the beginning drama can fade away, that ending is an all-time great. I watch it by itself when I want to get pumped up for some action. I love how visceral all the action feels. When a character gets hurt, you feel the pain. And the damage is not just cosmetic, the battle damage is integral to the story. The hero's journey feels all the more rewarding when the struggle feels so painful. The determination of Max is on full display, he goes through so much crap, but he just keeps going. Some sequels may be a more complete package, but this original still has some of the best parts of the whole franchise. And some of the best gritty action of any movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Dionisis T Enjoyable and surely way too ahead of its time! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review William B This was one hell of a thrill ride, I'm glad I got the first three films in a collection Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
