Croce CinePassion One of the few non-thrillers in the oeuvre of producer-auteur Val Lewton, this period piece shows even more glaringly how close his celebrated taste and intelligence could skirt to outright stodginess. Audience Member I loved so much the Maupassant's text and all the strenght of the French fierce resistance. "Our bell is silent": silent and non-violent resistance is just an ideal and the bell restart to ring only after one murder. I love the "Prussian Caress": a kiss with mouth full of smoke... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member This and "Youth Runs Wild" stand out among Val Lewton's films, as they are not horror movies. This is the more successful of the two. The beautiful Simone Simon finally gets to play a French woman, rather than a Eastern European cat person. Jason Robards' dad shows up again. A period piece about Germans invading France, released in 1944, is certainly interesting. But this is no Casablanca. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
