Critics Consensus

Neither funny enough to recommend as a black comedy nor unpredictable enough to work as a mystery, Maggie Moore(s) is less than the sum of its parts.

Barry Hertz Globe and Mail The film is an enjoyably slippery concoction that further proves Hamm has the leading-man chops that major studios so desperately need. Aug 29, 2023 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Chicago Reader You can craft a bleak parable about human venality and cruelty or you can tell a heartwarming story about the miracle of human connection. But when you try to do both at once, it feels jarring. Jun 29, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Maggie's crackling cast, including Tina Fey and Nick Mohammed, handles the clever dialogue with aplomb. Rated: 3/4 Jun 17, 2023 Full Review James Croot The Post NZ Actor-turned-director John Slattery’s first film in a decade is a terrific Coen-esque caper filled with colourful characters, dark humour and delightful dialogue. Mar 11, 2024 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a pretty-good endeavor that feels like it could (and should) be so much better. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 10, 2023 Full Review Stephen Applebaum Radio Times The talented cast suffers from underwritten characters that just about get by on charm, while a pervasive cartoonishness means nothing carries much weight and the film, while watchable, will likely be quickly forgotten. Dale M Fun, entertaining crime dramady Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Marc Z I never heard of this movie. I saw it starred Jon Hamm and Tina Fey and was curious. I watched the trailer and got more curious. This is a small quirky movie and I liked it. It has a Fargo vibe. Micah Stock is very good in the role of the husband. Hamm is actually great in the role of the Sheriff. Fey is always good. The supporting cast is good. I like Nick Mohammed as the Deputy. Well Directed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/03/25 Full Review Go 4 I Funny and dramatic and poignant. A nice diverse cast and that should have gotten it an Oscar nomination. But seriously, this movie started slowly but it tied up lose ends by the end. It wasn't lightening in a bottle but don't throw the baby out with the bath. Some new faces that all brought something to the party. This writer director has a nice start! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/02/25 Full Review Danny H Deserves a little more credit than people are giving it. It's not laugh out loud humour, but it is constantly darkly amusing. Similarly it's not major plot twist drama, but it's enough to keep you entertained all along the way All the actors all do an excellent job. This movie won't blow your socks off, but in an era over overblown disappointments this one won't leave you disappointed. Worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/25 Full Review Kate S I really enjoyed this movie until the last few minutes. They killed off a character that didn't need to die. It didn't fit the rest of the movie, and changed the whole feel of it. The rest of the movie, even with all the murders, felt like a dark comedy. The last few minutes were way too serious and sad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review Steve G Peacock says this is a comedy but 15-20 minutes in, nothing but weirdness that involves woman stalked and killed and child porn and a guy setting up his wife to be killed. Online, people are saying it's a "dark comedy". It's evidently so dark that no comedy can be found. Are writers today no longer able to write comedy? I'm surprised to see Hamm and Fey involved in such a waste. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
