Fake it 'til you make it. The latest gem from Amalia Ulman (El Planeta), MAGIC FARM takes us on a kaleidoscopic journey packed with twists and turns, cross-cultural encounters and true personalities. When a misguided American documentary crew in search of their next viral segment ends up in the wrong town in rural Argentina, chaos ensues. As they collaborate with locals to fake a new music trend, unexpected relationships form and an unfolding health crisis becomes apparent. Colorful and unfiltered, MAGIC FARM is led by a stellar ensemble including Chloë Sevigny, Alex Wolff and Simon Rex. Shot through with a vivid sense of place, this Berlinale and Sundance selection combines a surreal send-up of the media with a heartfelt exploration of humanity.

Director Amalia Ulman’s use of cheap and cheesy visual effects is presumably meant to be ironic but adds very little to this paltry offering. Go to Full Review

Its attempt at absurdity rarely lands, leaving behind a project more self-indulgent than insightful. Go to Full Review

Burke Battelle’s whimsical score amplifies the offbeat charm, but the comedic tone is ill met by tonal inconsistencies, flat punchlines and a wilful lack of momentum. Cross-cultural satire lurks unassertively in the margins. Go to Full Review

Think of Magic Farm as an above average episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia with Gen-Zers and their chaperones. Go to Full Review

...Magic Farm becomes a true oddity bordering on the bizarre, which in my case took me from laughter to disenchantment, from fascination to irritation, and back again. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Ulman’s vision here is ambitious but doesn’t quite come together. It’s funny to see idiotic Americans stumbling through a small South American town, but there’s no substance outside of this premise that gets old by the end of the first act. Go to Full Review

Solo es una serie de viñetas de la Argentina rural y el equipo de producción maravillandose con todo. El talento de Chloe es totalmente desaprovechado y aparece menos de 10mins en la película. See more MB C @MB.Cinema Jul 8 Amalia Ulman's Magic Farm is a satirical take on cultural ignorance and media exploitation, wrapped in surreal comedy and striking visuals. While visually bold and conceptually daring, the film often stumbles narratively—lost in scattered dialogue and shallow commentary. Alex Wolff delivers a standout performance, and the film’s aesthetic choices are memorable, but its social critiques remain underdeveloped. It’s an ambitious experiment that entertains more than it enlightens.... See more Ben P Jun 11 'Missing the forest for the trees,' or so the saying goes.
