Kathleen Sachs Chicago Reader Loznitsa opts for long, static wide shots that wholly embody the gradations of the conflict at hand. Apr 8, 2022 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It's profoundly affecting, eerie and, at times, strangely beautiful. Rated: 5/5 Mar 9, 2015 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) Loznitsa offers something that these days is rare and precious: close-up coverage of history in the making that doesn't have "breaking news" ribbons or network logos plastered all over it. Rated: 5/5 Feb 22, 2015 Full Review Ricardo De Querol El Pais (Spain) An extreme documentary, there's no narration, just stationary takes and ambient sound of the [Kiev Plaza uprising] for two long yet hypnotic hours. [Full review in Spanish] Jun 10, 2022 Full Review Angus Batey NME (New Musical Express) A violent, challenging and essential doc on the protests that sparked revolution in Ukraine... Rated: 4/5 May 18, 2021 Full Review Ben Nicholson CineVue An engrossing, arresting and singular source through which to view this very specific moment in recent Ukrainian history. Audience Member Just finished watching the documentary Maidan on Netflix...What can I say...I was born on the Sverdlov street, which is a 10 minute walk from the Maidan...I grew up this city, playing near the fountains of the Maidan as a child, with my school friends... I trained as a weight lifter at the Dinamo stadium..I traded my best stamp collections in the underpass underneath it...my mum bought the ????????? cake in the best cake shop in the city there.....I walked those streets as a child until I was 15. What I never realised was how lucky I am to have been born and raised among people so noble, so brave, so determined that they would go and fight empty handed against a murderous wolf-pack of cowards (Berkut) to protect their future and the future of their children. I bow to the dead and the living...I bow to those who stood, no matter what, in the face of fear, the elements and death, holding hands and each other...wishing only to help everyone around them to be free... Today, like never before, with tears in my eyes I say: long live free, beautiful, and proud Ukraine, the only country where people will die before submitting to tyranny. I have never been prouder to have been born in Kiev...Ukraine...! Thank you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie does an amazing job of providing a witness to events - but fails to help us relate to or understand them! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Static and extended fixed point recording without commentary of the Ukrainian revolution. From the organisation of the protests to the fleeing of the president, all told in a passive, observational way and always plenty happening. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A somber meditation on a pivotal moment in Ukraine's struggle to emerge as a modern independent state free of corruption and Russian domination. This is neither prop-art nor propaganda, but instead a lens on the events as they unfold seen from the perspective of a bystander or witness, without voiceover narration or interviews. The director let's the scenes speak for themselves without any camera movement at all. It's almost as if the camera were a window. Warning: there is no dialogue, and no individual action, but rather long crowd sequences. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member the fixed camera position makes you feel part of what's happening. a bit more context could have been given on events.
