91% 22 Reviews Tomatometer 55% Fewer than 50 Ratings Audience Score The legendary Gérard Depardieu brings to remarkable life one of the most beloved characters from 20th century crime fiction in MAIGRET, the exquisite, masterfully-directed new crime drama from multi award-winning writer/director Patrice Leconte (Monsieur Hire, Ridicule, The Girl On The Bridge), based on Georges Simenon's internationally best-selling novels. Paris, 1953. The body of a beautiful young woman is discovered at Place Ventimille, dressed in an elegant evening gown. There is nothing to identify her, and no witnesses. Pensive and world-weary Inspector Jules Maigret (Depardieu) endeavours to piece together her story, and in doing so uncovers details about her past and character. In his enquiries, he encounters Betty (Jade Labeste), a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the victim, but who also reminds him of one even closer to his own life.... Simenon (and Leconte's) formidable protagonist -- a French counterpart to Agatha Christie's Poirot and P.D. James' Dalgliesh -- has been brought to the screen before, but Depardieu leaves an indelible stamp on the character, bringing tenderness and dignity to a man prepared to listen before he speaks, and to stand up for those without a voice. Gill T I didn't want it to end - the 1953 Paris detail and Dépardieu's sad, wise detective were compelling and the characters all have depth and are seen and understood close-up. The profound effect of the case on Maigret and how it leads him to behave are more important than the plot, which I also really enjoyed despite some unlikely details, partly because of the beauty of it all and the French dialogue. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/10/23 Full Review Mauro L (Mauro Lanari) Some lines of dialogue are fabulous, I don't know if they are by Simenon, Leconte or co-writer Tonnerre; other problems damage the quality of the film, which is a noir while many insist in calling it a crime drama, mystery or detective story. 1) By eliminating the complete title of the novel, 'Maigret et la jeune morte', the anhedonia manifested by the commissaire in the first scene lets itself be confused for a long time with the tragic weight of an exhausting job such as dealing with murders and killers. Instead it turns out that it is a paternal burden for the death of his daughter, as if the sepulchrality of Maigret's existence could be summed up in that omitted "jeune morte", so cumbersome as to be projected into far too many characters. The directing style has inexplicable oddities: rapid zooms, jumps in focus, jerks of the camera. 3) The 'physique du rôle' effect: maybe Jean Gabin, Gino Cervi and now Gérard Depardieu didn't even need to act. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review catherine w This was a slow burn for me. It was so matter of fact, so domestic. Depardieu was so restrained. In a way so faithful to the novel. It grew on me. No tricks. I wish there were going to be more. Alas! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review rita d This movie could be an atmospheric noir with impeccable period style in dress and mise en scene, and a great leading actor. Sadly, the direction is lifeless, the rhythm almost impossibly lethargic. The plot and narrative tension are thrown away, as if the mystery should hold no actual interest for the viewer. Better stick to the books, if you want to enjoy some Maigret. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review avindu g Maigret's authenticity in every aspect is most remarkable. Expressive visuals of a decay to which dreamers flock. A hulking father too old and worn to save daughters of the city presented with a effortless performance. Though it's origins are infrequent Maigret is a welcoming experienced experience . Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It’s dour, certainly, but the sense of bone-tired exhaustion and crushed hope that linger like pipe smoke works rather effectively for this particular case: the murder of a sad, lonely girl in a rented designer dress. Rated: 3/5 Sep 3, 2023 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) Depardieu, controversial off screen, remains charismatic on it. But not, in this case, charismatic enough. Rated: 2/5 Sep 1, 2023 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator He waits. He is pensive. He is not blankly sullen, which is where so many actors go wrong. Depardieu captures all this. He is a tremendously charismatic presence, and it’s that presence we’re here for, rather than the denouement. Aug 31, 2023 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Patrice Leconte’s movie emphasises its sombre tone, and even though the plot’s contrivances glare through the darkness, the overall result is satisfying — a magnetic star and a rich atmosphere. Rated: 4/5 Aug 31, 2023 Full Review Terry Staunton Radio Times Director and co-writer Patrice Leconte's script stays faithful to author Georges Simenon's tightly constructed original story, Maigret et la Jeune Morte, and the film's rich ochre visuals perfectly embody the elegance of the period.
