Marco L @decatur555 1 day ago A slow, heavy and emotionally distant rural drama that may appeal to viewers who enjoy small forgotten British period pieces, but did very little for me. The setting has some appeal: a lonely cove, a poor orphaned girl collecting seaweed to survive, a disabled grandfather, a hostile village and a harsh Cornish coast full of wind, rocks and waves. On paper, that could have become a rough, painful coming-of-age tale. In practice, I found it dull and rather lifeless. Veronica Quilligan has a physical, almost wild presence, and Donald Pleasence is always interesting just by being there, but the film never made me care enough about the characters. The rhythm is the main problem: not just slow, but slow without enough tension, beauty or emotion to justify it. Some may see a delicate Victorian story rescued from oblivion; I saw an aged, clumsy, leaden curiosity. A slog with seaweed, wind and a lot of suffering faces. See more Read all reviews
