Josiah Teal Film Threat ...has a lot of laughs and fun where it counts. Rated: 7.5/10 Dec 6, 2022 Full Review Tim Brennan About Boulder While I had serious issues with the storytelling and comedy (and we’ll get to that), there’s no denying that James Pratt has directed a movie that looks and feels like it cost a hell of a lot more than a hundred grand. Mikey D Malibu Crush is the kind of comedy where you know from the start you’re in for something silly, and that’s part of the ride. Two clueless best friends decide the only way to win back an old flame in Sydney is to fake being famous film students and the chaos pretty much writes itself from there. The movie is full of awkward encounters, over-the-top gags, and some charmingly rough-around-the-edges moments that make it feel like a passion project more than a polished studio rom-com. It’s not groundbreaking cinema, but it doesn’t need to be. Malibu Crush is a breezy, lighthearted watch best enjoyed with friends, popcorn, and the expectation of a fun, slightly outrageous adventure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Kelly F Malibu Crush is a goofy, low-budget indie comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously—and that’s exactly where its charm lies. The plot follows two best friends from Pasadena who hatch a ridiculous plan: pose as prestigious film students just to win back an ex in Sydney, Australia. What unfolds is a mix of fish-out-of-water antics, awkward romances, and over-the-top situations that lean more toward parody than polished rom-com. Sure, the production value is modest, but the film makes up for it with plenty of heart, cheeky humor, and a willingness to poke fun at itself. If you’re looking for an easy, silly watch that doesn’t pretend to be anything more than light entertainment, Malibu Crush delivers a few laughs and some unexpectedly sweet moments.
