Francois Truffaut Arts (France) Alas! Never was [Ray Milland] less genuine, more unbearably a sinister show-off than in this film, the script of which is a bunch of clichés. Blu B A lot better than I was expecting. It's biggest problem is around the direction which is super basic and lowkey. The cinematography and soundtrack are just alright honestly. Basic camerawork, the setting isn't that memorable, and this looks like every other western you've ever seen. The music is very forgettable also. However, everything else isn't bad. Milland and Bond are the two best things here and give solid performances. Ward Bond especially really has a lot to do with why this holds together. In the second half he does a great job making the drama interesting and adding layers to the plot. It can sometime lose focus as Raymond disappears at certain points when the drama of Bond takes over and the girl holds things down. The rest of the supporting cast is a bit forgettable including the love interest. The opening 10 minutes is impressive and for 60-70% of the runtime there really isn't much dialouge. There is a real understanding of visual storytelling here at certain points that caught me off guard. Also Milland is suprisngly good in a Western as the lead and the accent was pretty well done. It's just the direction really isn't anythign special and it can lose focus at points and get a tad boring in the middle. But Bond does a great job getting you back into it with the daughter father backstory. This is a deep cut Western that any fan of Milland in front of or behind the camera, vintage westerns or Bond may like here. It's much more of a drama than it is a true western. It starts of quite gritty, t is a shame that that mood does not continue. There is not a lot of action in it at all and a lot of the film is set in house, which is what makes the film so slow moving. Essentially Wes Steele (Ray Milland) is accused of murder and hides out in a house belonging to Nadine Corrigan (Mary Murphy) and it is a question of does Corrigan trust Steel? Matters are further complicated by the fact that Corrigan is the daughter of the town Sheriff (Ward Bond) who is ill in the same house. The story does pick up pace a bit in the second part of the film, essentially when people find out where Steele is hiding out. The twist in the story is well placed within the film and sort of opens a new chapter within the film. The acting is not much to speak of but Ray Milland does achieve the role of the nice tough guy, quite well. Raymond Burr is excellent as the villain of the film. The first scene he is in you can tell that he is the villain. Mary Murphy has a large role as the owner of the house and the scenes between her and Milland are quite good. Ward Bond is not really in most of the film as he plays an ill Sheriff. When he is in it properly then he has an instant effect on the film. A slow moving western, which picks up the pace slightly towards the end. There is also well-placed twist in the story towards the end too. The acting is average really with no one particularly standing out. It's an enjoyable western but it has to be given time to get into. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member its been some time scine i shore the film Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A notorious gunman comes across six people dead on a stagecoach and decides to ride into town to notify the town folk only to be accused of their killings. He takes refuge in the one place no one is going to look, the house of the sheriff, and ends up falling in love with the sheriff's lovely daughter who wants nothing to do with him because she believes him a vicious and cold blooded murderer. Good support from Raymond Burr (Perry Mason) and Lee Van Cleef (The good the Bad and the Ugly) who play the villains. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
