      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It may not be groundbreaking, but Man of Tai Chi represents an agreeably old-fashioned picture for martial arts fans -- and a solid debut for first-time director Keanu Reeves.

Giorgio S Keanu Reeves is a good director and a better villain. The fight scenes are great and the story is really interesting. Keanu resurrected his carrer with John Wickbut this get him there Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review splashout 5 This movie is a classic for me. I love the style and lore of this film. The twists and the choices the main character must make. Super underrated film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Need some real stuff to be anywhere near legendary. Unbelievable shot angles didn't do it any credits either. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Robin G Netflix films with non-English dialogue in the film are basically unwatchable. English speakers wanting to watch this movie have a choice between a) No subtitles for any dialogue in a foreign language, so you have no clue what's happening. or b) Closed caption subtitles where EVERY sound is described in text, along with ALL dialogue no matter the language. Might as well have someone in the corner of the screen signing the whole way through while you're at it. It's just breathtakingly stupid. Netflix apparently don't understand that English speakers need subtitles for the foreign language dialogue, but THAT IS ALL. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/30/22 Full Review sam w The story isn't anything special, but has some very entertaining fight scenes full of fast paced martial arts, although they tend to be understated rather than showy in their style. Reeves suits his role as the mysterious benefactor pulling the strings, but does look a bit out of place considering the rest of the cast. The film has a good length to it, but seemed to lack something overall. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Liam D It is a solid martial arts movie but it could have been great if not for miscalculated use of strobes Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The brutally efficient shooting style Reeves employs to film master choreographer Yuen Woo Ping's breathtaking fights is refreshingly grounded and old-school kinetic. Nov 4, 2013 Full Review Mark Jenkins NPR Reeves has clearly seen many Hong Kong films, and with the help of two veterans, Hollywood cinematographer Elliot Davis and HK editor Derek Hui, he's replicated one. Nov 1, 2013 Full Review Michael Sragow Orange County Register Keanu Reeves makes his directorial debut in a cartoonish kung fu movie with splashy fight scenes and an underdeveloped wit. Rated: C+ Nov 1, 2013 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse An entertaining genre movie that pays tribute to the past with a traditional story about honor and the discipline of martial arts. Rated: 3/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See "Man of Tai Chi" won't blow your mind, but it is a well put together piece of fun for fans of old school martial arts cinema. Rated: B Jul 8, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Fans of martial arts flicks, despite some choice sequences, will most likely be disappointed. Aug 29, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
