Critics Consensus

Man on Fire's solid action and top-shelf cast are undone by a relentlessly grim story that gets harder to take the longer it goes on.

Audience Member Great film. Too violent for some. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Todd F Style over substance in movie form. Starts strong but is quickly overcome by its absolute desperation to be cool above all else. Even just someone opening a car door is edited with a filter, shaky camera, zooming in and out. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Blu B It's pretty good but I struggle to hail it a 5 star masterpiece. Denzel is really good and carries this. Dakota Fanning is also really good and has really good chemistry with Denzel but it's a shame it's not a for a lot of the film. Everyone else is pretty good but a bit forgettable. Especially the Voice who we never see reallly ever so I don't even know if you can count him. The cinematography and music is good too. The setting is memorable, the special effects are excellent and filled with tons of practical work, but the direction can be hit or miss by Tony Scott here. Pacing wise this is a long film but it does a good job for the most part justifying the long runtime. Where this struggles bigtime is the editing is just alright and really distracting for the majority of the runtime. The thing is edited half the time like a MTV music video and it gets very seizure inducing at times. Uneeded slow motion, filters, and flashes constantly at random makes it so distracting and holds back riveting action or drama lots of times. Best example was when he was cutting the dudes fingers off and the stupid editing just gets in the way and is so distracting for no reason at all. It does take a while to set itself up but once he goes on his mission of revenge it never lets up. The plot itself also can be a bit over the top with it's twists and turns at points as well but it's pretty gripping overall. This is also really violent and brtal as well. It's like if someone took Death Wish & Prisoners and mixed them together. You'd get this. Tony Scott just needed to dial back a bit here with some of the crazy editing and honestly that probably would've been enough to win me over here. Most people though if they are fans of any actors in this, Tony Scott, crime dramas, or crime action/viglante flicks will like this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Stephen H This one of the best moves I’ve ever seen in my life. Line after line after line. Denzel Washington steals the show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Audience Member Too grim and violent, too much of a slow burn for critics apparently, this has always been one of my favourites of the 2000’s, with its experimental, fast-paced editing and unflinching depiction of revenge, and stellar performances from Denzel and Fanning. Beneath all the grit there is genuine heart, a story of redemption. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Matthew H My favourite film of all time , what is wrong with you morons who slate it? Must have tiny useless cocks Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
