This Oscar-winning documentary tells the story behind Japanese daredevil Yuichiro Miura's 1970 effort to ski down the world's tallest mountain. Miura's trek to the top of Everest provides much of the film's drama, as several members of his climbing team die in the process. The arduous trek gives way to footage of Miura's stunning descent, which requires him to use a parachute to control his speed. The action is supplemented by passages from the journal Miura kept during the adventure.

Leaburn O Jun 22 It’s a questionable venture and barking mad. Overshadowed by tragedy is a relatively early film of the sheer threat of the giant mountains. The actual stunt is madcap and it took a nutty egoist to try it. Watched on Amazon Prime. See more Jasper M Jan 23 Sometimes guys just wanna ski down the highest mountain in the world. A well made and meditative film on a completely unnecessary task. See more Connor S 02/22/2024 The most phenomenal spot on the planet makes this story just interesting enough. See more 11/15/2010 A champion Japanese skier decides he wants to ski down the highest mountain in the world, but he's gay...no wait, that's a you tube clip. This doc chronicles the long journey which will lead to *SPOILER* about two minutes of uncontrolled skiing followed by a minutes of uncontrolled plumeting until he comes to a rest and is rescued. The main meat of this doc is the trip up the mountain. The unbelievable amount of man power and determination and our skier's thoughts on being compelled to try such a feat. See more Read all reviews
