In 1948, Nelson Mandela (Danny Glover) joins the African National Congress, working to overturn South Africa's apartheid policies. His political activism brings him into contact with a young social worker named Winnie (Alfre Woodard), whom he eventually marries. Initially committed to nonviolence, Mandela turns militant after the police massacre scores of peaceful protesters in 1960. When Mandela is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, his wife carries on the struggle.
