Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The worst thing I can think to say about any killer shark movie is that it has no personality, but that’s the situation here, Maneater a flesh-eating nightmare of aquatic monotony. Rated: 1/4 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times By the end, “Maneater” has walked right up to the edge of being a fun, silly, “so bad it’s good” time-killer. But after taking way too long, it never really arrives there. Aug 26, 2022 Full Review Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle Even as a guilty pleasure, Maneater is a particularly rough watch. Rated: 0.5/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Jenn Adams Rue Morgue Magazine Despite a few shocking kills, there’s little in this fish film to make anyone scared to go back into the water. Rated: D Sep 24, 2022 Full Review Sarah Cartland Caution Spoilers Not a good film — with limited, repetitive shark footage and often lazy writing — though there’s a good turn from Trace Adkins as hoary old sea dog Harlan. Rated: 2/5 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Erik Childress The Friendship Dilemma Podcast The filmmaking and special effects are so bad that it is hard to tell whether this falls into the woefully insincere Sharknado camp or the kind of awful movie classic that audiences gather around on their own Satellite of Love. John C The killer shark genre is nothing new - especially as the 'grand-daddy' of the genre ('Jaws') was released all the way back in the seventies. Yet 'Maneater' manages to just about keep things interesting with its straightforward thrills. Sure, the premise of a man-eating shark terrorizing a group of beachgoers is nothing groundbreaking, yet there’s a certain charm in the simplicity of its execution. This definitely isn't the next 'Jaws,' but if you're looking for an easy, no-frills thriller to stream then 'Maneater' is surprisingly watchable. What sets this film apart from the many shark movies that came before is the presence of Trace Adkins. Playing an older, grizzled local with a vendetta against the shark, Adkins brings a welcome touch of maturity and gravitas to a cast that otherwise feels like classic "monster-fodder." His character gives the film a bit more weight, and his screen presence stands out against the younger, thrill-seeking crew. Although props to the younger lead actress who I'd never seen before, but kind of looked like Cameron Diaz from some angles. Of course, no matter how good the cast is (and how many excuses they seem to make to go into the dangerous water!) it's the shark that everyone has come to see. And, for a B-movie, the monster is in it a fair amount. And, maybe it was because I happened to be watching this film on my phone while at the gym, but the creature looked quite passable in terms of special effects. In the end 'Maneater' might not be a cinematic masterpiece, but never really tries to be anything more than a fun, occasionally tense thriller that does just enough to keep you watching. If you’re a fan of the genre or simply looking for something easy to stream, this one’s worth a bite. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Audience Member its a really great movie. we just watched this after the reef on hulu 9/2/24 and let me say wow. reminds me of a cross of jaws and the meg with the shark in it. not a traditional boring shark movie like deep blue sea or sharknado or open water, its a great movie that we really enjoyed. trace adtkins is great in the movie too. hope they make a part too. some like it some dont but my wife and i really enjoyed this movie cause the shark just doesnt eat or devour you like other shark movies. it jumps out of the water in like the meg does . the movie is great. so we definately highly reccomend it if your in the market for a great shark movie watch this you will like this if you like jaws or the meg. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review gracie l if i could give this 0 stars i would. this was the worst shark movie i’ve ever watched. if “jessie” (the blond) would stop with her bullcrap maybe the movie would be tolerable. she was the only one to survive, and from the very beginning i was hoping she’d get ate. not only her, the shark is horridly ugly it makes me want to throw the remote at the tv. the acting and directing of this film was 0/5. please take this movie off all platforms. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Andrew B Vapid. Dull. Lifeless. Terrible acting, writing, special effects, and an overall terrible execution of just another drop in the ocean of killer shark movies. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review Vinnie D Silly movie. Jaws ripoff. Too much character development. Horrible acting. Lousy effects. Avoid at all costs! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Jeff M There are exactly two elements of this movie that are partially worthwhile. One is the ghastly special effects which are the cheesiest this side of SHARKNADO. And the other is an equally ghastly performance by Trace Adkins who recites his lines like Sam Elliott on Prozac. All other elements are equally atrocious but not in such a fun way. The cardinal sin, like most movies like this, is that there isn't a single moment of inspiration or originality. In fact, the final line is such a blatant rip-off of JAWS that Spielberg should sue. My recommendation is to simply read the plot synopsis above and then move on with your life - or better yet, find a DVD of JAWS. Or even JAWS 2. Or maybe even JAWS 3. But not JAWS THE REVENGE. Let's not push it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
