      Critics Consensus

Shocking and bloody. Maniac is smarter than your average psychological slasher, but it's often undermined by its excessive gore.

Jay H A great horror movie with excellent performances. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review S R Not a patch on the original. Honestly I HATED the overly artsy feel they gave this one and the POV camera angles got old fast. The original bad me captivated and immersed. With this one I was just bored and wanted it to end. It's a shame too, since Elijah Wood is a genuinely great actor. But he just failed to capture the same vibes that the original movie had, not to mention the awful CGI gore and blood effects that looked terrible. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Ian this is a very stylish and creative remake. this movie exceeded my expectations, i thought it would be more of the same of the original but they actually made some pretty neat changes and overall this turned out to be a pretty damn good remake and a good horror film in general. i was really impressed with the cinematography, the whole movie is in first person, which was in the original movie but for the whole runtime. the whole movie being in first person gives it a found footage feel which i feel was a great decision and was really well handled. another thing i adored was the gore, the gore is awesome in this movie. i'm talkin' seeing bones snap, knifes going through throats, cleavers going through mouths, this movie had no chill. my biggest gripe with this movie was Elijah Wood's performance as Frank Zito, his acting was great don't get me wrong but he just didn't fit the character well enough for me. overall a really well made remake and isn't at all disrespectful to the original. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Ye F Boring, self important, glossy, unrealistic and unnecessary remake of the 80' classic. I was hopeful on the first scene but as most always, The Dreaded CGI gore came into view and ruined what could have been an extension in such an exercise. The knife under her chin wasn't long enough to kill or plunged with enough force to impact the brain and the scalping was a simple slash that capped her off lol. I'm a stickler for realism as most should be when dealing with this subject matter. Bleh nuff said Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/12/23 Full Review DRAVEN R This remake is hard to describe in terms of quality, it's not good, it's not bad, it's just a nothing movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/09/22 Full Review Audience Member This movie shows the cruel behavior of a mental patient that actually appears good scripted storyline of a mental person killing people especially the women in order to get revenge for his mother's bad behavior against his past. let's come to the point, movie casting is good enough. the movie makes us feel fearful and interesting. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk One for hard-core gore-hounds. Rated: 3/5 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald A creepy experiment that stays with you. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 25, 2013 Full Review Jeff Shannon Seattle Times Frodo Baggins as a psycho-killer? Why not? Rated: 2/4 Jul 11, 2013 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Impressively stylish in all aspects and brutal in ways the original couldn't pull off. Effectively reimagines the core concept while also injecting it with fresh perspectives that feel organic as opposed to artbitrary. Rated: 4/5 Sep 22, 2023 Full Review Howard Gorman NME (New Musical Express) With its unique style, a career-redefining turn from Elijah Wood and insane levels of violence, this is not only one of the better remakes of recent years, but also one of the best horror films of the decade.
