      Critics Consensus

Mark, Mary & Some Other People offers an amusing enough diversion for rom-com fans, albeit one that starts strong and fades at the finish.

Emmy G Terrible ending. Leaves you so dissatisfied. Very very very unfulfilling. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Audience Member What a refreshing change to the modern over-produced movie. Flawed characters struggle with maturity and expectations as they navigate options without considering consequence and damage. The interaction between the characters is disarmingly genuine, it is hard not to feel for them. And how great that, while playing with fire, the movie allowed them to get burnt. You got the impression that no one really knew what they were doing, except the writer/director, Hannah Marks, who handles the chaos with genius precision. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member "La La Land" without the musical numbers, but with absolutely charismatic performances by Ben Rosenfield and Hayley Law. The course of young love never runs smoothly and Law and Rosenfield play it to perfection, with chemistry to spare. Both deserve to be stars. The script is both heartbreaking and funny. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review jonathon r The music in the film is amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoy the cinematography with the aspect ratio feeling like a family college, and the shaky camera movement adds to the realism as if you were there. However, this does not save the movie completely with the second act feeling a bit stale and boring. I would be lying if I said I didn't find my self laughing at some of the jokes, and if I said I didn't find the story interesting. With the third act of the movie really bringing it back to that realism, and a soundtrack that fits really well. Especially Green Days "Holy Toledo". All around an alright movie I wouldn't really recommend, but still has a nice message and does what some other rom-coms are to afraid to do. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Mary is the exact type of girl I am terrified of getting stuck with . Amy Nicholson New York Times Marks is a sharp and funny observer of today's youth paradox: How can her generation build stability on a foundation of temp jobs, shifting social mores and the suspicion that the entire planet might collapse before they cash in their 401(k)s? Rated: A- Nov 4, 2021 Full Review Nick Schager Variety The film remains amusing and spry even as it coasts along a path that will feel familiar to most rom-com fans... Aug 30, 2021 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association It's like being invited to a feeble Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice-themed party that fizzles. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 23, 2021 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews A film that certainly makes us think of our own views of relationships and romance, but that doesn’t always answer the questions it raises. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2023 Full Review Bill Bria Vague Visages While ultimately unfulfilling, Mark, Mary & Some Other People acts as an empathetic, honest snapshot of the current dating scene, one that will be looked back on as quaint someday even as the same issues crop up decades from now under a new guise. Jun 6, 2023 Full Review Jade Budowski Decider The script may fail to realistically explore the depths of polyamory, but thanks to dreamy chemistry between its two young leads and some genuinely funny scenes, Mark, Mary & Some Other People proves itself more than worth your while.
