There are reminders here - as there were in the recent Irish horror The Lodgers - that the haunted house movie still contains possibilities. Neither will it, however, keep you awake at night like The Orphanage.

I don't know why this movie is having such a bad rating, trust me guys it will not disappoint you. This movie, it really worked for me. Such an underrated ONE !!

I did not see that coming. I'm not sure everything makes perfect sense, but the pieces come together fairly easily after the plot twist (nothing is overly complicated, unlike what some specialized reviewers claimed). My only downside with the movie is the ending (or rather the lead-up to it), which feels weak and rushed compared to the rest. Overall this is a great drama; really depressing.

It blew my mind, it was unexpected and the plot was different to many recent mistery movies so I was really satisified with the movie, a little bit uncomfortable with the ending but it's still a fine movie

Movie that starts off as a drama about a single mother and four kids coming to the US from England in the 1960s to start a new life after trauma, then becomes a ghost story, which then morphs into a murder mystery, albeit with horror elements. The central conceit is that the mother dies and leaves the children, most of whom are teenagers, to fend for themselves and keep the authorities from finding out about their situation for fear of being disbursed to foster homes. A love blossoms between the oldest boy and a neighbor, played excellently by a young Anya Taylor-Joy, and we slowly find out that the father committed atrocious acts, and the mother had feared that he might hunt them down. There is a surprise twist ending that veers once again into ghost territory, with a finale that wraps things up into a little too neat of a bow. Still, the characters and their relationships are developed deftly producing some truly poignant moments. I’m actually a bit puzzled as to why this didn’t get a higher critical score. There are also fine performances from another horror queen, Mia Goth, and Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things fame.
