What we get here is no more real than a Hallmark card, except that it’s a different kind of Hallmark card, one in which Mary has to jump off a roof to escape a burning building and Joseph (Ido Tako) gets into sword fights. Go to Full Review
John Anderson America Magazine 12/07/2024
The results aren’t disrespectful, just a hodge-podge, a sort of overly reverent sword-and-sandals epic rich in awe-struck characters, Luciferian mischief and historical opportunism. Go to Full Review

The opening narration explicitly says that we don’t really understand her story…and then proceeds to tell a story about Mary that’s pretty much just every random thing people know about her. Go to Full Review

Likely fearing a stumble into the deep end of Lake Blasphemy, Caruso errs on the side of humorlessness, which pushes proceedings into the realm of overbaked melodrama. Go to Full Review

Jacob B 5d I admire Mary for trying to do something different with The Nativity Story but I don't think it fully comes together as a darker and edgier take. The acting is good with Anthony Hopkins being undoubtedly the most memorable part of the film and there are some good moments but this sadly isn't the best Biblical film revolving around Jesus' birth that’s out there. The pacing is slow, it doesn’t fully commit to being either a coming-of-age film or a thriller and I'm not too sure about the artistic liberties taken. The debate about labour pains was one thing but almost turning Joseph into an action hero in the name of escaping Roman soldiers willing to commit infanticide is probably not going to sit well with the target audience. I tried giving this film a chance but Mary is overall rather forgettable and barely worth religious groups' wrath. At least they gave people who edit Wikipedia pages some variety to the proceedings. Its not biblical neither how it would be, Mary its just a pretty face doing things in this movie See more D M Nov 17 I loved it. Absolutely beautifully filmed.
