After unknowingly getting involved with gangster Babe Wilson (Alan Baxter), diner owner Mary Burns (Sylvia Sidney) is arrested as an accomplice when Babe kills a government agent. Mary is sentenced to prison and placed in a cell with an informant who breaks her out, hoping she will lead the authorities to Babe. Unaware of Babe's whereabouts, Mary takes a job at a hospital, where she befriends explorer Barton Powell (Melvyn Douglas) -- not knowing that Babe and his henchmen are searching for her.
