J M Without question the weakest of the Christopher Guest "mockumentaries", I nevertheless caught myself laughing out loud enough to give this a lukewarm recommendation. That being said, there's not a single character in this movie that is even remotely close to matching the greats of Guest's earlier projects. And the return of a character from one of his prior films only makes that realization all the more obvious. In theory, I think the idea of poking fun at sports mascots has potential. The trouble here is that none of them are particularly amusing, and unfortunately a good chunk of the movie is devoted to the performances of the mascots. The biggest laughs for me came from the tried-and-true Guest veterans like Parker Posey, Michael Hitchcock and particularly the late Fred Willard. Overall, I felt a tinge of sadness and nostalgia while watching this - it's like a championship baseball team reuniting after a couple decades to play one last game together. Everyone's a bit slower and a bit older and the game just isn't as exciting as it used to be. But at least they're still playing the game. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Gareth v Probably Guest's worst movie. A format that is starting to look pretty tired and needs a shake up. Shame. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Audience Member While this is a considerable improvement since the fiasco of For Your Consideration (even if I miss Catherine O'Hara and Chris O'Dowd is completely wasted), Guest's return to the mockumentary style has more misses than hits, being only really fun during the presentation in the end. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a lovely little movie, depicting the over-the-top indulgence of team mascots. It kind of reminded me of the move "Best In Show" about the fanatical lives of show-dog owners and their competitive streaks. This movie was funny and entertaining. Parker Posey was absolutely delightful especially in the scene where she almost got disqualified from the show through no fault of her own. See this one if you want a smile on your face all through the movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Looking at the reviews i seem to have enjoyed this more than most but i thought it ws quite enjoyable. Some funny characters and even funnier Mascot dances made it enjoyable for me. The anatomically correct donkey costume was a standout moment for me! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member An underrated film. Guest does what Guest does. And having been a former mascot it was too fun to watch. Mark Kennedy Associated Press There's a deep hollowness under the funny suit. Jan 1, 2017 Full Review David Wiegand San Francisco Chronicle Guest never wanders too far from his comedic safe zone: He is a master at finding humor in how seriously we take ourselves. But no one is complaining. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 17, 2016 Full Review Caroline Framke Vox As a whole, though, Mascots only occasionally rises above "pretty okay." Guest's actors...commit to the material, but the improv isn't as consistently sharp... as it was in A Mighty Wind or Best in Show, and the movie ends up lagging because of it. Oct 13, 2016 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Netflix's Mascots, the latest "mockumentary" from actor-filmmaker Christopher Guest, is a fairly inconsequential and not terribly funny movie. Feb 22, 2021 Full Review Joni Blyth One Room With A View Mascots is a typical slice of surreal mockumentary fun from the legendary satirist.
