Audience Member This film is a truly astonishing achievement by Monika Borgmann in capturing the narratives of some of the perpetrators of the Sabra and Shatila massacres. The film documents the brutal murder, by Bachir Gemayel's Isreali-trained personal army, of Palestinian civilians and militants in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps that took place in 1982, during Lebenon's tragic civil war. (Read more about the background here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabra_and_Shatila_massacre.) The documentary, which took three years to make, provides unadulterated access to the voices of six murderers and their brutal acts, nothing censured, however horrific. Shot as if these murderers are being interrogated, with their faces in shadows and only their body language and words being presented, it is an unpleasant film to watch. But in capturing something universal about individual and collective violence, the film not only provides additional evidence to these infamous massacres, but also insights into how genocidal mass murder can be perpetrated by fellow human beings. When one murderer talks about being desensitised to killing by the third murder ("you kill the first and didn't like it, the second you are unsure, the third is okay and by the fourth you are enjoying yourself" - from memory, so not exact quote) your mind turns to Cambodia and Rwanda where such behaviour continued on a huge scale. Only shown twice in the UK, let's hope that more audiences can have a chance to see this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
