      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It can be didactic rather than truly suspenseful, but Master is an impressively well-crafted horror outing with a lot on its mind.

Cemi H One of the best movies I've seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Dave C It's a shame this isn't hitting higher than 3.5*. The three leads are superb in their roles, and the story itself is a good one. Unfortunately the execution is lacking. The delivery of something truly ominous and scary isn't enough without a cohesive backstory, and this film lacks just that. It leaves the scares and tension listless and less effective Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Kyle M Agreeably didactic that only contributes to an ongoing discussion as slowly demonstrated, positioning this better purposed as psychological drama except it tried to sell horrifically by atmosphere and visual cues which were crafted irrelevantly and disjointedly, therefore lessening the impact Regina King aimed for in her performance. (C+) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Jacob B Another leftist-pandering propaganda piece about a black savior protagonist surrounded by a sea of "racist white republicans" classmates. Your basic leftwing cookie cut-out "horror" trope, shoving the same-old systemic racist propaganda bullcrap down your throat by insinuating that America is deeply rooted in racism at the hands of the evil caucasians (all republican of course) The only "decent" white people in the film are white liberals who can do no wrong. At any rate, this review probably won't even make it on the review page because Rotten Tomatoes is rotten to the core and doesn't like it when the audience disagrees with their leftist pandering reviews, which always upvotes liberal trash and downvotes anything that is wholesome, conservative, family oriented or based on Christian values. If you like politically correct steaming turds disguised as movies than this flick is definately for you! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Audience Member What started off with a lot of promise ended up very anti climactic. I didn’t know if it was supposed to be a horror movie or a social commentary on race relations. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/17/23 Full Review Mark A Boring and self righteous. Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review A really interesting film, with more than a little Jordan Peele in it. Apr 15, 2022 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) What this film wants to do is convey how all of this feels like a horror movie... It maintains that tone throughout. Mar 30, 2022 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday "Master" is a genre picture that works as well as it does because it's rooted in everyday horrors. Rated: 3/4 Mar 28, 2022 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers It’s an ambitious experiment that sometimes stumbles, but in the end its relevance eclipses its narrative fuzziness. Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan Diallo created a story that is bold and astonishingly unique, twisted with jolts and tension of a surprising final act. Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Sarah Vincent Cambridge Day Diallo chooses horror to warn students and academics of color of the psychological dangers hiding behind the hallowed halls. The moral monsters of “I Am Not Your Negro” (2016) become literal. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 16, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
