Critics Consensus

Masterminds' great cast and stranger-than-fiction true story are largely wasted on a scattershot comedy with a handful of funny moments and far too much wackiness.

Steve Davis Austin Chronicle Galifianakis' cluelessness can tickle, but he's having a progressively difficult time making things feel fresh. Rated: 2/5 Oct 6, 2016 Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader It's just smart people acting like dumb people in a dumb movie. Rated: 0/5 Oct 5, 2016 Full Review Jordan Hoffman Guardian A tooth extraction without painkillers would have been far more enjoyable. Rated: 1/5 Oct 1, 2016 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba Here, Hess amps up the most obnoxious excesses of his entire cast and lets their grating bad-improv skills run amok. There’s barely a laugh in the entire film. Jun 12, 2025 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Nobody would ever mistake Masterminds for a good movie ... but it would be criminal to deny the huge laughs strewn throughout, sneakily exploding like depth charges at random intervals. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 18, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins It's a rather surprising, amusing mix of playful goofiness and crass grotesqueries. C B I thought this movie- featuring an all-star cast - was so funny! Never liked Zach, but he is not too bad here. But I didn't understand the part where two of the characters have the same name and were born on the same day(?) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review alan g One of the worst crime movies ever. Bad cast, bad plot, bad acting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/25 Full Review THE WRESTLING S Definitely a underrated movie made me laugh through out the film Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review YOCHABEL S Funny , amazing cast Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review Rhys L Daft comedy fun, some artistic liberties taken, but extremely laugh-out-loud funny at times. Not taking itself too seriously & happy escapist stupidity!!👌 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Will this win an Oscar? Nope...is it a nice silly way of watching a movie? Yep...and Kristen Wiig is as usual...simply gorgeous Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
