Stephen Holden New York Times Mr. Van Damme's Gibson is so opaque that he makes Mel Gibson's Mad Max seem weepy by comparison. May 20, 2003 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Few genres amuse me more than post-apocalyptic fantasies about supermen fighting for survival. Cyborg is one of the funniest examples of this category, which crosses Escape from New York with The Road Warrior but cheats on the budget. Rated: 1/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Richard Harrington Washington Post It's just another martial arts film, all dressed up with no place to go. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy It never distinguishes itself as anything but another Mad Max wannabe, although its minor success did lead to two straight-to-video sequels (the first with an 18-year-old Angelina Jolie, the second with OJ Simpson's freeloading houseguest Kato Kaelin). Rated: 2/4 Aug 29, 2021 Full Review Alan Ng Film Threat I loved all the fake gore. Plenty of decapitated heads on a pole and bodies swinging off chains. Kill or be killed. Rated: 6.5/10 Aug 24, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Ironically enough, the most believable cyborg is Van Damme ... in his role as a human. Noble S I have watched cyborg over 10 times and it never gets old to me! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Audience Member A Cannon Films/ Van Damme cult classic channeling Mad Max and featuring some killer action beats, including one that starts 36 minutes in and doesn’t culminate until the 56 minute mark following a foot chase that’s a classic for those of us who grew up with this film. Plus the central villain used to give me nightmares as a kid! Based on his visual stylings alone, Fender is up there with the best of the Bads in my book! Low budget, martial arts fun with a post-apocalyptic paint job and Jean Claude doing what he does best! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Deborah M One Late Saturday Night in 2021 film review - for real: Cyborg (1989): In which what could pass as members of Twisted Sister, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, and Whitesnake, the curiously named Fender Tremolo, Marshall Strat and Pearl Prophet travel from NYC to Wrightsville Beach NC by way of Castle Hayne NC in pursuit of or being pursued (it’s hard to tell which) in order to crucify Gibson Rickenbacker (Jean-Claude van Damme) from the mast of Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge where he’s reunited with companion Nady Simmons to continue to the CDC in Atlanta in order to save what’s left of civilization from a living death plague. You just can't make this stuff up. Well, actually, somebody did and they should put down the pipe. ~dpm 2021 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review M R Van Damme kicks ass in this one. Someone should rip off this movie which partially ripped off Terminator only with Martial Arts. I feel with better action and special effects, this film could be an action classic. Overall not bad. Rating: 7/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Jay H It's less than 90 minutes long, and it's still an interminable bore. The music score is atrocious. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Bryna L This is cult classic material. When I was a kid I was scared of the villain. The chase scene is epic.
