Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, Gracie Atherton-Yu and her husband Joe (twenty-three years her junior) brace themselves for their twins to graduate from high school. When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry comes to spend time with the family to better understand Gracie, who she will be playing in a film, family dynamics unravel under the pressure of the outside gaze. Joe, never having processed what happened in his youth, starts to confront the reality of life as an empty-nester at thirty-six. And as Elizabeth and Gracie study each other, the similarities and differences between the two women begin to ebb and flow. Set in picturesque and comfortable Savannah, Georgia, May December is an exploration of truth, storytelling, and the difficulties (or impossibility) of fully understanding another person.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk A combination of rollicking, darkly delicious entertainment and brilliantly rendered character study, this has the making of a modern classic. Justin Great movie about psychology, and the acting is superb. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Jessika Johnson Charles Melton is my favorite part of this film. The way he is the stand out in a film with an A-List cast like this oh Im hopping on that Charles Melton best supporting actor Oscar campaign. I have too many thoughts but dont know where to start. One of my favorite watches of the year. Natalie Portman is amazing as always. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review Robyn K Film kind of boring and slow - with no let up. Always nice to see, however, the two female leads and observe their acting. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/21/23 Full Review cav May December was very interesting to watch, kept you wondering exactly what all the underlying problems of the 3 main characters were. Very well acted by all the players. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Anastasia K Disappointed by the movie. I love Todd Haynes' previous works, such as 'Carol' (2015) and 'Far from Heaven', where, unlike it happens with this movie, you're enchanted by the slow-paced process of unraveling the plot, you feel touched —by the cinematography, actors, script— while in 'May December' the screenplay doesn't pass any serious test, it seems to go absolutely nowhere, with an exception, perhaps, of Gracie, who at the end says that she is a strong person (and we see her hunting before), in contrast with the way she is depicted the major part of the film. But, although it can be claimed that this movie can be accommodated within the film d'auteur tradition or arthouse cinema, its screenplay lacks some important parts of the Hero's journey, and with that I don't say that all movies should blindly follow the classical Hollywood structure, but some 'milestones' should be inevitably present to attract our attention, which is not the case. This film is like bland food. The bangs of the actress, played by Natalie, remind the bangs of the shy Therese, but don't provoke anything. Some frames and details, like surroundings of the house, episodes of daily life, are beautifully done from an aesthetic point of view, but lack a purpose. The good actors, as someone already commented, could not save the film. To my view, moreover, the characters of Joe and Elizabeth are rather plain. It can be summed up as two hours of lost time, and I really hope that the following work by this brilliant director will stand head and shoulders above this one. Well, not everything should be a success. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/25/25 Full Review Melchizedek Franz Noval S May December explores the complex and uncomfortable dynamics including trauma and exception, the nature of performance and reality, deception and the public's fascination with scandal. Although, the acting for a major highlight were Julliane Moore and Natalie Portman lauded for their portrayals of two women with shifting dynamics, but however, that was Charles Melton's performance as Joe garners the most praise critics found his portrayal of a man grappling with suppressed trauma to be deeply moving and heartbreakingly sincere, with Todd Haynes' direction noted for distinctive visual style and music creates the atmosphere of unsettling tension and discomfort, and as for Samy Burch's screenplay for it's clever and layered approach has been recommended.
