An eccentric French family meets in the country for the funeral of their matriarch (Paulette Dubost), which takes place at the same time as the 1968 student revolts in Paris. Even with the latest updates of the riots coming in over the airwaves, the family prefers to focus on petty squabbles and personal matters rather than the current political climate. When the escalating protests leave them no choice but to venture deeper into the wilderness, they become even more removed from social affairs.

Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: B+ Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times I like it because of the time I got to spend with the characters as they dealt with family matters over a period of days. It was intrinsically interesting, not because of what it was about, but simply because of what it was. Audience Member This is a mildly funny country-house romp, that is perhaps sustained by the fun it pokes at politics and naive dreams. Family death, city-heirs descend with arrogance and disdain for the country life, but are then won over by its charms. Straight forward enough, but 'Milou en Mai' goes further. After being won over by nature, the party are then bitten by nature in the wild, following a forced evacuation. After the May 1968 riots are presented with dreamy naivety, the harsh consequences and inevitable chaos come to the fore. Just as they all seem to fall in to a trance, so too they all seem to 'wake up' and life goes on as it began. But it's all pretty frivolous, in a charming enough way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Fabulous little comedy on the aftermath of the death of a matriarch of the family. Classic Malle. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Louis Malle and Jean-Claude Carriere's entry in the tried and true Country Mansion genre, with the always welcome Michel Piccoli overseeing the gathering of his extended family for his mother's funeral. Funny and moving, with a bit of politics (sexual and otherwise), and Bunuelian surrealism (courtesy of Carriere, a Bunuel collaborator), with a wonderfully eccentric and gifted cast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Subtle humour interspersed within this French drama set against the backdrop of the May '68 riots...... French through & through....
