Pauline Kael The New Yorker McQ is like a dull fifties movie. Sep 21, 2023 Full Review Judith Crist New York Magazine/Vulture There are killings aplenty fore and aft, car chases galore, lots of non-actors to match Wayne; lots of actors to be wasted... lots of flashy photography of Seattle to glaze the eye, and marble-mouthed dialogue to stultify the brain. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Dick Lochte Los Angeles Free Press John Wayne, at 65, is nothing less than a national monument. And he deserves better upkeep and attention than his latest film, McQ, provides. Dec 16, 2019 Full Review Matt Brunson Creative Loafing It's more a rumor than cold, hard fact that Wayne was offered the role of Dirty Harry and passed on it. At any rate, the Duke played his own version of Inspector Harry Callahan in this agreeable if stridently unexceptional film. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com The Duke, desperate to maintain his hold with viewers, tries to step into the Dirty harry territory with this disappointing crimer. Blu B It's a entertaining 70's Crime Thriller. Defintely a bit of a knock off of Dirty Harry though and probably wouldn't exist without it. The music is pretty good actually and probably the best thing with that funk hard hitting 70's style music. The ediitng is alright and probably the weakest aspect. The actual crim is sort of convuluted and it can be a bit meandering. Really the problem is it has trouble linking the character driven moments of Wayne with the actual crime elements. Everything else though is half decent actually. The first half is a bit better than the second half though when it starts to get bogged down a bit in the ins and outs of the crime mystery. Wayne is solid and along with the soundtrack the best thing. I will say though your level of entertainment will defintely depend on if your a big fan of The Duke or not. The direction isn't bad here but some scenes can be a bit more boring than others especially anything at night where it's jsut kind of bland to look at. It's pretty cool though seeing John Wayne with a silenced Uzi in a 70's crime thriller. The car chases aren't bad either. It's noticeable though the cutting away with stunt doubles all the time though. I wish the villian was a bit more memorable and didn't dissappear for the entire middle. And it is kind of by the numbers stuff for the genre and era but besides that it's not bad. Anyone who is a hardcore fan of the director or Wayne should check this out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review William R. P Same old swaggering blowhard. Tired Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review Shadowman4710 A rare John Wayne cop thriller, this is actually considerably better than it sounds. Wayne was miscast as a Seattle police Lieutenant investigating the murder of his partner and a couple of other SPD officers. Wayne was way too old for this part (he was in his 70's at the time) and the role would have been better if say, Robert Mitchum had played the role but otherwise it's a clever story about drug dealers and cops in early 70's Seattle. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A rather standard police actioner from the 1970's, with John Wayne playing a policeman who is angered when his best friend on the police force is murdered (not knowing at the time the friend was corrupt), and quits the force when his superiors refuse to let him go after the drug dealers he believes responsible. The story was okay, and the villains certainly were good, but John Wayne was in his sixties and obviously too old for the role. A younger star could and should have been put into Wayne's role. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member The hero lives on a classic yacht, drives a Brewster Green Pontiac Trans Am, carries a Browning Hi-Power and a silenced Ingram. How cool can you get? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A decent John Wayne flick Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
