      Critics Consensus

Miranda July's debut feature is a charmingly offbeat and observant film about people looking for love.

Brandon Judell indieWire A perfectly-realized vision: from the sound design to the acting to the direction. For a first film, I was astounded. Jun 14, 2018 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek "Me and You" has a refreshingly unhysterical (but sometimes hysterically funny) take on what it's like for kids to grow up in a world of Internet sex, broken families and precocious sexual curiosity. Mar 14, 2018 Full Review Liz Moody Empire Magazine July's tender, original movie is a wonderfully uplifting experience. Rated: 4/5 Aug 19, 2005 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com It's a powerful, beautiful and often funny look at life as we truly live it in all its mundane moments and simple connections. Mr. M I cannot believe it has taken me so many years to finally discover Miranda July. Looking for a movie with a great Rotten Tomatoes score, I came across "Kajillionaires." Amazed by that film, I next went to this, her debut film. Believe me when I tell you that you are in for a rare and magical experience when you skip into her world. Now I get to experience everything else she's done. I've got my smile ready. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Alec B Its like a Todd Solondz film in that way it looks at weird human relationships but it doesn't have the same humor or emotional power. Terribly obnoxious and smug. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Shock Therapy R Discombobulated amalgamation of non sequitur experiences. July gets coherent six years later with a brilliant meaningful film called "The Future" Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review isla s To me, this was a distinctly quirky and bizarre film. There is a sort of a plot but a confusing one and if anything, too many sub-plots. Its a bit seedy and I wasn't especially interested in what happened. I wouldn't call it funny, or especially thoughtful, just...quirky, in a weird way frankly. Suffice to say, I wouldn't recommend it, no. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dave s So try to imagine Noah Baumbach and Todd Solondz combining their creative forces to come up with something that has a Napoleon Dynamite vibe to it. The end product would be along the lines of Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know, an odd little movie about odd little people who are adrift in life, trying to make some sort of connection with somebody in the same situation. The characters are interesting, the scenarios are always intriguing and surprising, the music is appropriate to the narrative, and the performances are appropriately understated. On the down side, it sometimes feels like it is being quirky just to be quirky, adding nothing to the narrative or the character development. Despite this, it's a movie that'll leave you with a good feeling – you just won't be able to figure out why. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review jaime h Bizarre and beautiful. Wonderful and weird. I will watch anything by this art genius director, Miranda July! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
