Critics Consensus

Me Before You benefits from Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin's alluring chemistry, although it isn't enough to compensate for its clumsy treatment of a sensitive subject.

Mikayla W This is a beautiful movie. I've watched it before, ages ago, and decided to rewatch it. This is one of those movies that get better the more you watch it. It will invoke great emotions out of you. Make you laugh, make you cry, and leave a gut wrenching, but warm feeling with you. I love this movie, and I feel as though everybody should watch this at least once. Great acting, great storyline, and great directing. 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Shalee C I saw this movie, when it first came out on DVD. My grandma had bought it, me and all the girls in my family watched it together for a slumber party. By the end of the movie, we were all drenched in tears. I, who happens to be a hopeless romantic, am giving this movie 5 stars. When you look past the blatant hypocrisy of people who wrote bad reviews on this movie, you’ll find that movies are just movies; fiction. Yes, based on true problems with real people in the real world, this movie is fiction. And if you look past what you deem as “offensive” or “calamitous” I know you’ll see this movie as beautiful, eye-opening, and downright hilarious. A woman, who is kind, generous and brave, meets a man who used to have the world in his hands, and his entire life was stripped from him. He was insecure, rude, and arrogant. Then She comes into his life, and despite his look, or the fact he was in a wheelchair, she fell in love with him. She looked past his insecurities, and found her own reasons why she loved him. This movie is my favorite of all time, and I wish I could rewatch it for the first time again. Truly, truly a masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review Maayke B What was this!? I am so confused... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review Nicole W Absolutely beautiful movie. I loved the characters and the reality of the situation. Tear jerker 💯. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Lisa R As much as I love cheesy love stories, this one was a bit too much even for me. However, I am finding myself still thinking about the characters days later, due to the amazing performances and the BBC usual suspects I enjoyed seeing in the roles. It’s cozy and pleasant for a rainy afternoon, and I did shed a tear or two, dammit Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review Kiara M Me before you is a heartfelt, romance drama that stays with you way after finishing the film. The film is based on Jojo Moyes’ bestselling novel of the same title. The film follows Louisa Clark, a young quirky and loving young women. Who is trying to find any job she can to help out her family. She takes a job to as a caregiver for Will Traynor, wealthy and down for anything adventurous man. But he became paralyzed from an accident, which changed his outlook on life. Their relationship develops over time, they challenge each other, and have moments of joy, sadness, heartbreak, and reflection. Well, Louisa tries to make the best out of Will’s situation. Will wants nothing to do with her at first and that is where their story starts. Why this film really stands out to me is because yes, it's about romance but it's about the choices we make and the impact we have on one another. One strength of the film is its rawness and emotional nature, which is what I love most about this film. It was able to have moments of warmth and joy even well having hard and heavy topics. I think it’s great at balancing disability and loss along with the message of love and human connections. Reading the novel and watching the movie, the movie stays true to the novel and the world and vibes it portrays. It does a great job at making sure the emotional weight and heartfelt feelings are portrayed just like in the book. Emilia Clarke, best known for Game of Thrones, plays the role with energy and brings the same loveable personality as the character does in the book. She does a beautiful job at capturing all the emotions of this story in the film and makes you feel every emotion from sad to happy through your TV screen. Sam Claflin, as Will Traynor, masters portraying the range of emotions his character has despite the limitations of his character’s physical limitations. He shows his charter struggling with love and his weight of his own emotions and his dyabilities adding to the film's emotional impact. Their on-screen chemistry is shown throughout the film and makes the relationship in the film that much more heartbreaking and heartwarming, all at the same time. Looking through the director's view, Thea Sharrock’s does a great job at capturing the essence of the book. I think the film is visually beautiful and vibrant and captures all the romance and drama elements. The captures of the landscapes and countryside's of English is pleasing to the eye in every way. But I felt some stories lines were a little rushed, but that could be because you can’t fit a whole book in film. The film makes the audience reflect on love, life, and personal growth. I love the questions the film raises like the power of love, how much one person can affect your life, and making choices for yourself. This is why the themes of this movie are more than just romance. Which is one of the reasons I rate this film so highly is because it’s more than just the romance it has other great messages. One aspect of the book I felt was brought to life greatly was the wardrobe of Louisa. The fun and colorful outfits were perfectly represented as one would see them in the book. However, it's hard to find a film without flaws seeing there is always room for improvement and growth. I think it could have shown more of the physical struggles of Wills' condition and yes it had the emotional connects but I think it could have shown more of how difficult living in a wheelchair would be. I also know that most people prefer romances to be all happy and have a happy ending, I like these because they make me feel more than one emotion. But it is understandable to not like the hurt and growth in this movie so, if that is the type of romance stories you like this isn’t one of them. This film definitely gives you an emotional punch and maybe hard to watch for some younger and or views with past experiences. It's great for viewers who love films with thought provoking messages that explore more than just love. If you love films that make you feel big emotions and leave you questioning your story and life, then you will love this film. The film has heartfelt performances, strong emotional impact, and stunning cinematography. While it has some minor issues, particularly in its portrayal of disability, it remains a powerful and memorable experience. Me Before You is not just a love story, it’s a film that makes you think, feel, and appreciate the complexities of humans and the relationships we make.
