This film about the meatpacking industry is by the godfather of the modern-day documentary. Told without voice-over or talking heads telling the moviegoer what to think, "Meat" examines the many stages that cattle and sheep undergo on their inexorable journey from grasslands to our dinner table. The documentary is not for the faint of heart or for vegetarians, but it serves as a troubling reminder about the nature of industrialization and the fact that all is not as it appears.

David Denby The New York Review of Books Meat is a handsome and scornfully witty film-a sly parody of those celebratory industrial documentaries we were all forced to watch at summer camp on rainy days. Aug 13, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A good old-fashioned observational documentary following meat from the field to the feedlot, then through the processing and packaging plant, and into the truck for delivery to market. Wiseman does not shy away from the inconvenient and uncomfortable truths of disassembling animals for our use. In fact, he perhaps relishes a bit rubbing our noses in it. He spends plenty of time on labor negotiations and the telephone sales force as well, giving a nicely fleshed out look at the meatpacking industry. As I feared, the audience I saw the film with contained its share of people who needed to vocalize their distress and disapproval whenever animals or messy animal parts were being handled, so the rest of us were subjected to their buzzing, tutting, and clucking through significant portions of the film.
