Audience Member [28th Atlantic Film Festival] The aging population will soon outnumber the working class, which promises to cause a social upheaval. Mechanical love studies the role that artificial humans and pets may have on this new population. There are some amazing psychological issues at work here, which almost serve to overshadow the research occurring in the film. The most fascinating and emotional involve an elderly woman retreats from human contact to spend more time with her mechanical pet. The larger story involves Professor Ishiguro and his team trying to make their android creation more human; their conversations involve both physics and spirituality. At the same time, Ishiguro has seemingly neglected his own, particularly his wife, family to focus his attention on the android. Highly intriguing stuff that makes no judgments about it's characters. It does, however, move at a methodical pace, with a misplaced soundtrack.
