At the start of the Korean War, Lt. Benson (Robert Ryan) and his platoon are ordered to rendezvous with American forces at Hill 465. Benson and his troops encounter a truck containing Sgt. Montana (Aldo Ray) and his passenger, a colonel (Robert Keith) experiencing psychological combat trauma. Benson, who believes the safe passage of his men takes precedence over the colonel's medical needs, seizes the truck to transport his platoon's equipment -- a decision that Montana fiercely opposes.

One of the best of the lost patrol movies, set in Korea in 1950, bleakly anti-heroic and prefiguring Milestone's Pork Chop Hill in the bitter irony of its climactic assault on a hill.

It's taught and slow, like the platoon we are following. It delves deep into the limits of endurance and physiological strain. However it's just not very exciting or engaging which makes the film quite a let down.

A tough, dogged look at the psychological beating combat troops endure. Film has special meaning for me because my mother named me Aldo Ray after seeing this movie in the summer of 1958. I was born two months later on September 6th --- coincidently, the events in the film all took place on the same date.
