this was the first collaboration between Evans and Kuwais, and what a road have they been on so far. The Raid 1 and 2 became cult classics and this movie was just an appetizer to the true 2 classics, a must see for silat fans out there

Garett Evans' deep dive into making a documentary about Penjak Silat turned into this low budget martial arts action film. The film showcased the awesome beauty and lethal nature of the art and the talents of Iko Uwais. Uwais was a delivery driver and the time but he is terrific in this. This one opened the door to The Raid, Headshot, and more. It is a good move. The action is as good as any. Well filmed. Well choreographed. A lot of heart.

While the action scenes are great, Merantau's supporting characters are extremely disposable, and plus make too many stupid decisions that could have the second half of the movie avoided if there was any common sense of urgency.

When the fighting starts, the film takes a turn for the exciting, as Pencak Silat is a very impressive and violent style and Iko Uwais makes the most out of Ruhian's spectacular action choreography.
