Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse When the fighting starts, the film takes a turn for the exciting, as Pencak Silat is a very impressive and violent style and Iko Uwais makes the most out of Ruhian's spectacular action choreography. Jan 19, 2020 Full Review Brian Orndorf BrianOrndorf.com In dire need of a tighter edit and a few smiles, Merantau is a bizarrely lethargic picture, great with violence, but a complete chore to sit through between the punches. Sarfaraz A Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid franchise) wrote and directed this Indonesian martial arts and crime action drama. Iko Uwais (The Raid franchise) stars in his debut film. The film's title refers to a local custom in which a young boy is sent by his family to search for livelihood and confront the challenges of life in order to become a strong man. Yuda (Uwais) arrives in Jakarta to find work, where he encounters a sister, Astri (Sisca Jessica), and brother, Adit (Yusuf Aulia), who have been shunned by their parents. Astri works as a dancer at a club, while Adit begs or steals. Yuda saves Astri from her abusive manager, who eventually kidnaps her for his European bosses, who traffic women for prostitution and for raping. The film is Gareth's debut feature film, as well as their first collaboration. The film also stars Yayan Ruthian, who also appears in Gareth's The Raid franchise. As usual, there are long takes of fight scenes here, and unlike Gareth's subsequent films, which include violent and blows and fight scenes, these fight scenes are modest. Aside from the European actors, who appeared b-grade characters in the film, the remainder of the local Indonesian cast delivered good performances. The film's ending is somewhat disappointing, but that is all you can expect here. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review noah g iko uwais the goat tbh Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/24 Full Review Alain M this was the first collaboration between Evans and Kuwais, and what a road have they been on so far. The Raid 1 and 2 became cult classics and this movie was just an appetizer to the true 2 classics, a must see for silat fans out there Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Iko uwais e pencak silat são juntos uma arma perfeita Filme em ingles mas mesmo assim n tira a essência da Indonésia.. Com cenas incríveis de lutas e um final muito emocionante Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Garett Evans' deep dive into making a documentary about Penjak Silat turned into this low budget martial arts action film. The film showcased the awesome beauty and lethal nature of the art and the talents of Iko Uwais. Uwais was a delivery driver and the time but he is terrific in this. This one opened the door to The Raid, Headshot, and more. It is a good move. The action is as good as any. Well filmed. Well choreographed. A lot of heart. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Indonesia's Ong-Bak and what a debut by Iko. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
