Hugo S A woman is released from a psychiatric hospital 15 years after murdering a classmate in a ritual offered to a ghost known as Mercy Black (the audience will find similarities with the Slender Man). The tragedy becomes a viral urban legend and her nephew is among the ones who are obsessed with this myth. The woman is forced to confront her dark past one last time in a race against time to save the child from sacrificing another life. Is this entity an imaginary ghost created by her disturbed mind or is it actually real? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/12/23 Full Review Audience Member As a lifelong fan of good horror movies and a person interested in true crime cases, I can say this movie is infamous, wrong in so many ways and utterly disrespectful. The writer is as grotesque as his own character Will. Most of all, is a very bad horror movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member It's weird that this is a Slender Man rip off that's better than the Slender Man movie. 😕 ↓ point rating ↓ 5.3 out of 12 = 44% ⚡️ acting - 0.4 ⚡️ cinematography - 0.4 ⚡️ costume design - 0.4 ⚡️ directing - 0.4 ⚡️ film editing - 0.4 ⚡️ makeup & hairstyling - 0.5 ⚡️ music - 0.5 ⚡️ production design - 0.5 ⚡️ score - 0.5 ⚡️ sound design - 0.6 ⚡️ visual effects - 0.4 ⚡️ writing - 0.3 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member It wasn't terrible. I will say that the movie felt like a decent B list Horror, but the "special effects" at the end were low C to D quality. Good for a decent laugh. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow, I can't believe Matthew Gray Gubler would do that Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I literally made an account because I hated this movie so much. If you are a horror buff, you likely wont enjoy this movie. None of the characters have clear motivations, not even Mercy Black herself. I've got 3 main points on why this movie sucked. For note, the main character's name is Marina. 1. It was based off a true crime case. I am interested in true crime, but I think a dramatization of an incident that happened so recently is a bit insensitive. The Slender Man Stabbing occurred in 2014, only 5 years ago. The maximum sentence these girls will face is life in prison. The victim luckily survived, but I'm sure has suffered greatly from her experience. I remember reading interviews about how hard it was on their parents and their community. Imagine being in their shoes and hearing they are making a horror movie based on what happened. I can only guess how upsetting that would be. 2. Poor usage of mental illness in the plot. I think this movie should have an advisory warning at the beginning. It was released straight to Netflix, so there should be no reason why they can't add a quick message at the beginning. They did it for 13 Reasons Why, they can do it here. I think it should have one because of the way delusions are written about. A main plot point is Marina trying to figure out if her delusions are real or not. At the end, they are revealed to be real. The concept of "Are you hallucinating or is it real" while perhaps scary to some, is also a very damaging narrative to people who actually suffer from hallucinations. Media that indulges delusions/hallucinations/etc can be very harmful to these people. It can cause them to disassociate or have issues controlling their condition. So a warning would be nice. Also, pretty much every mentally ill person in this movie tries to murder another person, which isn't a great message. I think the idea that "crazy people are scary" is just an outdated, overdone concept in horror movies. As a person who does live with mental illness and knows others who do, it's obvious the way these mentally ill characters are written is poorly researched. 3. It just doesn't make any sense. None of the characters are very well developed, and in a movie about a creepy monster, one would hope the monster would at least be interesting. I could go on about how each character is one dimensional and seems to do things for no reason. There's also so many unexplained moments! The two main culprits of the movie are *spoilers* Mercy Black and Lily. Lily was one of the girls involved in the incident and is hell bent on bringing Mercy Black to life. But why? Her reasoning is strange to me. It seems to all be based on the fact that Marina promised to help her do it. But there's little else. No one gains anything from Mercy Black coming to life. It's said that Mercy can heal the sick, but Lily doesn't have any sick people in her life at this point. Lily mentions that she wants to summon Mercy because she doesn't want to be the only one who can see her. But we learn that Mercy can only affect those who believe in her and can't even show herself to people who don't 100% believe. I think it wouldn't be that hard for Lily to just ignore Mercy until she left her alone, like Marina did. Mercy black is essentially Tinkerbell mixed with Oogie Boogie. A fabric scarecrow filled with spiders who can only live if you believe in her. Clap if you believe in fairies! This promise Marina, Rebecca, and Lily made to bring Mercy to life seems to be important, but there's no catch. Usually if you make a promise to a weird monster, it will eat you or something if you break your promise. But Marina broke her promise and nothing happened at all. So why does the promise even matter? Why target Marina when you could get anyone to help you bring about Mercy? But I guess Lily is just ~too crazy~ to act rationally. This isn't even mentioning how stupid the little boy character and the boyfriend character are. They could be completely cut from the movie with no consequence. If your horror movie relies on a creepy kid singing a creepy song, your movie probably isn't great. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
