Jay Boyar Buffalo Courier-Express This movie about alienation is, finally, too alienated from itself and from the world surrounding it to work as a movie. Rated: 3/5 Sep 21, 2020 Full Review Jesús Fernández Santos El Pais (Spain) The movie is skillfully crafted by director Alain Tanner, in a style as difficult as the journey of the protagonists. Jonathan P More relevant right now than at any time since it was made, this film is visually stunning and incredibly beautiful, well written, character-led, captivating with a fantastic, realistic conceit driving the narrative, which progressively darkens culminating in a final tragedy. Are the two main characters victims of predestiny, like Oedipus, or is the story a delf-fulfilling prophecy because the World is dumb, brutal and nasty place? The action of the story is a superb contrast to the art of the photography and the backdrops of the locations. I only saw it once on BBC2 a long time ago. It etched itself into my memory. I want every Woman who recently protested in Paris against violence towards Women to see this film. Did Ridley Scott remake this for America as Thelma and Louise? I have never seen him mention it or credit it in any way. Messidor is so much more. I want every Woman in the developed World to see it. To say this film is a masterpiece is completely inadequate and does not do it justice. I have been searching for DVD or BluRay and I cannot find anything. Probably Switzerland's greatest contribution to World Culture I don't have the words to tell you how good it is and the depth of the effect the wholly sympathetic characters had upon me, beautiful and sad. It's a travesty that this important work of art has been allowed to disappear from the common consciousness though with the degenerate zeitgeist of a sick ruling elite intent on continuing Hitler's War Against Women it shouldn't really be a surprise. Are the property rights to this film available for sale? It really is that important! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie helped change me back in 1979 when released. It shows the fragility of social controls and the Othering of people in a visceral way. 2 girls, hitching to their homes in safe and picturesque Switzerland, bump into each other on the road and, as the journey unfolds, very quickly find themselves social pariahs - wanted by the police, entirely on the wrong side of the law. And this is simply because they are 2 young women . . . . As a woman it lit light bulbs. Tanner is a didactic and elegant artist and I am still so very glad for this. I wish the movie was more available so my daughters might see it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review william k A fascinating Swiss road movie with multi-layered aspects to its story, drifting from an outsider utopia to a nightmare.
