Patrick I Maybe Hugh was the friends we made along the way (awooo). Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review David T Writer and Director Alex Smoot's "Metamorphosis" is a chilling character study of a relationship on the brink of disrepair. Hugh, portrayed by Gil McKinney, and Alyssa, portrayed by Natasha Krishnan, provide stellar performances in this dark, and sometimes disturbing drama/horror film. Gil is powerful as Hugh, a man that slowly descends into madness as he seeks to salvage what's left of his flailing marriage. Gil is equally impressive as a quiet and unassuming wife unsure of how to connect with and help her struggling husband. Alex Smoot delivers an impressive film with powerful moments of suspense, character interactions, and cinematography. Overall, I highly recommend "Metamorphosis." Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review Rick I supernatural thriller with a bite to it If you're looking for a quiet, slow burning drama that will get under your skin, look no further. I really dug everything about this movie. There's a ton of visual storytelling that begs you to pay attention and work out what's happening without just flat out telling you. It's beautifully shot, the score is unsettling from the opening frames, and the edit really stood out to me as dialed in. Two main characters working through their marriage issues in a cabin alone doesn't sound like much on paper, but it really can be. To me, it was all about the expert performances. Gil McKinney as Hugh is totally unhinged as he swings back and forth through two different people almost constantly. And his wife, played by Natasha Krishnan, is subtly terrified, trapped between her desire to love and support her husband, yet increasingly afraid for her life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/23 Full Review outdoorscientist some movies don't need a lot of dialogue. this is one. great plot, cast, scenery and...horror action! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review E. C Based on the preview, I wasn't sure if I really wanted to watch this movie, but my curiosity tipped the scale, & I'm glad that it did. Although the nature setting was initially relaxing, it soon became an atmospheric anomaly. This once beautiful environment quickly descended into a purgatorial pit of despair as the husband consistently withdrew from his wife (& even his own life), regressing into something less human. At first, we witness a married couple's problematic relationship, which isn't particularly unique. There's plenty of blame & shame in this finger-pointing game that assures further pain & suffering as well as alienation. Then, in true addict form, he encourages his wife to start painting again (so that he can do 'his thing' without spying eyes & prying questions). Clearly disconcerted, she tells him that she's just not 'feeling' it. Spoiler Alert: Either way, nothing stops him from indulging in his cannibalistic pursuits, which lend credence to his devolving physical, mental & emotional states. (Prion disease.) Unsettling as this movie is, I still feel sad for this couple. Addiction is an ugly beast that turns addicts into monsters, & their concerned others into unwitting casualties. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/06/22 Full Review Audience Member One helluva thriller! Glad I took a chance on this indie. Well made and well acted. The story is dark and twisty and kept me guessing throughout. It left me thinking about the demise of relationships and the roles we all play in them. Kudos to whoever made this.
