isla s This film is about loss and isolation, among other things. Its quite touching and poignant at times, with many scenes showing the adult daughter guiding others on the set of her film, while really she wishes for guidance herself. Its one of those films in which what isn't said is perhaps key more than what is. I suppose it is a somewhat deep film in that respect, although it doesn't necessarily appear that way visually because of its mundane settings. There are amusing moments present too. I liked it and would recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Serge L An adult story that revolves around the death of a director's mother. It works more or less and is complex enough to keep the interest. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/31/21 Full Review Audience Member A simple but very touching story, which is shot in a timeless manner (you can easily imagine this film having been shot in 70's or 80's). Great cast performance and a bittersweet aftertaste. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting story and cast but falls short on the emotion the movie maker is trying to portray . Could have been much better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Mia Madre takes the heaviest of subjects (losing a parent) and makes it human and, at times, funny. You might even call it a drama-dy with John Turturro playing an almost slapstick, ridiculous but funny character. I really liked this film. Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic Moretti and his actors establish a kind of instant empathy that makes the story all the more affecting. Rated: 4/5 Sep 22, 2016 Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader The general air of quiet intelligence throws the occasional outbursts of loud emotion into affecting relief, and John Turturro shines as the sort of unintentionally difficult star he doesn't seem like he'd be in real life. Rated: 3/5 Sep 9, 2016 Full Review Kimberley Jones Austin Chronicle Ma Madre is effective in dramatizing the familiar paces adult children go through tending to their parents: the hospital indignities, confused consults with doctors, and helplessness at encroaching dementia. Rated: 3/5 Sep 8, 2016 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema Quiet, kind, funny, and poignant. Only after the movie has been seen, digested, and lived with does one realize they saw something so wonderful. Rated: 4/5 Jun 28, 2021 Full Review Agustín Acevedo Kanopa La Diaria Moretti's typical games are there, not with the effusiveness of previous works but still being able to intersperse situations in which memory, past and imagination merge, with no hallways in between. Rated: 7/10 Jan 9, 2021 Full Review Mat Bradley-Tschirgi Battleship Pretension Although Mia Madre's peculiar combination of pathos and pratfalls didn't work for me, it can be an interesting film at times. Go in with muted expectations, and you might be surprised. Dec 8, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
