Critics Consensus

Miami Vice is beautifully shot but the lead characters lack the charisma of their TV series counterparts, and the underdeveloped story is well below the standards of Michael Mann's better films.

Miami Vice is a movie made by a man whose mastery of the medium, and whose obsessive concerns for detail, put images of uncommon distinction on the big screen. Go to Full Review

…Michael Mann’s terse, supple dialogue is part of the reason that Miami Vice is fast becoming appreciated as a modern classic, a soulful neo-noir copshow that was way, way ahead of its time in 2006…a scaldingly radical take that rings the changes… Go to Full Review

If nothing else, watch it for a gruff and wounded performance by Farrell, a serious turn by Foxx, and how well Mann uses the moody Miami sky to reflect his characters. Go to Full Review

Brian F. @FedUpDVDCollector 2d This one made me finally sign up to leave a review. Watched it because I’m checking out Jamie Foxx Roles I haven’t seen. He couldn’t save this film. Too generic and predictable. Copy and Paste from similar films. For being undercover they could not act more like cops. The music from the very start ruined the entire tone of the movie for me. I’m supposed to believe they are in a Miami club listening to linkin park and Jay-Z collab?…. many actors did well I actually thought Naomie Harris stood out the most. It wasn’t bad because of the actors, they just couldn’t void the downsides. See more shane o Nov 27 Colin Farrell holds this film together . There are a few very badly done moments and the plot gets a little sloppy . But over all it’s a good watch See more Rick M Nov 20 The series was definitely one of my all time favorites. This version just seems miscasted, lacking a decent storyline, and not even close to being modernized with its production. Mostly boring. You would think with the money budgeted for movies, they could WOW you with an iconic version of the show. See more Hesam T Sep 11 Michael Mann’s Miami Vice is sleek, tactile, and atmospheric—a moody crime thriller that hums with raw, jazzy energy. But beyond the stylish surface, it’s thin. The film sidesteps the TV show’s pastel nostalgia, only to replace it with a grim solemnity that feels more self-important than compelling. The cop plot is routine and implausible, the character depth barely registers, and the chemistry that defined the original is gone. Compared with Mann’s earlier work, the action set pieces don’t stand out and the characters never spark, leaving the film oddly hollow. I was occasionally mesmerized by its humid textures and nocturnal vibe, but those moments can’t disguise how glum, confusing, and often dull it becomes. In the end, Miami Vice delivers slick thrills without soul—a stylish exercise that proves Mann can still set a mood, but not always make it matter.
