      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Miami Vice is beautifully shot but the lead characters lack the charisma of their TV series counterparts, and the underdeveloped story is well below the standards of Michael Mann's better films.

Konstanty W Despite initial public aversion to this piece of cinema it holds back its ground years after premiere with thrilling noir-ish atmosphere with mostly great casting performance and decent writing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Jay B Really good movie. No way it should have such a low rating like this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review ACUMEN It's a masterpiece! The bad ratings here just shows that most people have expected something that can't be done. The old crew was too old at that time and the casting is in fact perfect. From the camera to the music to the acting, everything is done the way Michael Mann saw it from the beginning when he created the series. It is a very true revival of the original series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Adsie B Action packed on the edge of your seat action Michael Mann has done it agan 5/5 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review DanTheMan 2 Although it's often caught in this weird disconnect between attempting to distance itself from its roots and being too cool for school, Michael Mann's Miami Vice is a leaner, meaner and beautifully shot-inspired synthesis of impressionism and hyper-realism. Despite a wildly inconsistent storyline and a severe lack of charisma from its leads when compared to its television counterpart, where Miami Vice succeeds is in its woozy, disorienting, fever-dream ambience, using the moody skyline to reflect its characters, complete with a fabulous soundtrack to boot. Despite their lack of chemistry together, Foxx and Farrell are fine picks for the roles made famous by Thomas and Johnson, playing against their usual type. Often considered the one that got away from him, Miami Vice has only aged gracefully, it's a highly satisfying piece of stylish entertainment, its beauty unparalleled. Gorgeously sombre and ultimately thrilling in its execution from a man who is a master of the medium, whose obsessive concerns for detail, put images of uncommon distinction at the forefront. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review Parker D Mehh this wasn't that good a movie the acting was generic to be honest and the action was uninspired despite being cool to look at at times but if you want a far better buddy cop action movie I reccomend bad boys 4/10 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard A deadly serious, stylishly noirish, but fundamentally insubstantial thriller. Dec 10, 2018 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal Miami Vice is a movie made by a man whose mastery of the medium, and whose obsessive concerns for detail, put images of uncommon distinction on the big screen. Dec 9, 2018 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Everyone in this story, apart from our dissembling heroes, turns out to be exactly what they seem. Dec 9, 2018 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex Complete with mind-blowing cinematography and a wildly inconsistent storyline, Miami Vice is one of Mann’s most impressive spectacles. Rated: 8/10 Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review If nothing else, watch it for a gruff and wounded performance by Farrell, a serious turn by Foxx, and how well Mann uses the moody Miami sky to reflect his characters. Rated: 3/4 Jul 12, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Mann has elected to turn this Vice into something altogether leaner and meaner - if not necessarily tighter.
