This documentary delves into the life of Italian Renaissance artist and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti. Incorporating excerpts from the legendary figure's various writings -- including letters and poems -- the production offers many examples of Michelangelo's genius, even unveiling previously unseen works of art by the prolific master, who lived into his late 80s. By remaining focused on Michelangelo's own artistic output, the film creates an intimate look at the creative visionary.

Audience Member Thank you PBS for introducing me to this marvelous documentary, which has become my absolute favorite and introduced me to Michelangelo Buonarroti. "Michelangelo: Self Portrait," is narrated in first-person, using Michelangelo's letters, diaries and poetry to tell his story in a more intimate and insightful way. To hear Michelangelo's own descriptions of his work is an enjoyment and to receive closer views of Michelangelo's sculptures, drawings, and vatican frescoes like the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgement is just breathtaking. His personal struggle to balance Christianity and Classicism mirrored the turbulence of the Renaissance and fueled his creativity. Having experienced this wonderful program, I hope to one day see Michelangelo's works in person and become more appreciative of this man, Michelangelo.
