Kent C A refreshing, poignant, introspective, positive retrospective on an era that sheds light on social changes, and also explores intensely personal journeys. For those interested in learning about the 60s-70s hippie-ish communes fad, this story is surprising--in a good way. Midian Farm, from this telling, was a positive, non-drug-addled attempt at back-to-nature. Unlike pretty much every other commune story from that era, the Farm avoided a descent into drugs, sex, and the other human weaknesses that doom such efforts. Although a couple members mention that it started feeling "cult-like" at the end, it also seems that it avoided becoming a real cult. The reunion, 45 years later, demonstrates that the members were, mostly, people trying their best to do the right thing, as their relative saneness and healthiness attests. The one thread left hanging, though, is the question: what split the Cowie family? What was the mother's illness? What was the father's issue? Those questions are really at the heart of the story.
