Duane Byrge The Hollywood Reporter While nicely layered with tough, conflicting personal questions, Ducks ultimately flaps off into easy outcomes and pat contrivances. Still it's an overall charmer, and director Stephen Herek keeps it flying with a nifty mix of slapstick and action. Oct 2, 2017 Full Review Derek Adams Time Out Very lame ice-hockey flick. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times The film is remarkably oblivious to the fact that if the team weren't hell-bent on a championship, young moviegoers would be significantly less interested in its adventures. May 20, 2003 Full Review Ed Travis Cinapse It’s practically the stuff of resistance these days for a film’s hero to learn wisdom from children about the purity and beauty of honor, and play, and radical acceptance despite winning or losing. Dec 6, 2024 Full Review Steve Warren Southern Voice (Atlanta) You can learn a little about hockey and a lot about life from The Mighty Ducks. The formula is tired but the movie's fresh and entertaining. May 9, 2023 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) There are some parts that feel very 90s family entertainment but I don't really mind that because it's executed so well Rated: 7/10 Mar 23, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Joey H. Released on October 2nd 1992; directed by Stephen Herek, written by Steven Brill, and a musical score composed by David Newman; this family sports comedy would go on to not only spawn a trilogy, but also a real life NHL Hockey Team, a short lived cartoon series, and even a short lived requel series nearly 30 years later. This first film in the franchise tells the story of Gordon Bombay, portrayed memorably by Emilio Estevez. Gordon is a successful but arrogant attorney who has never lost a case for the law office he represents. However, his supervisor, Mr. Gerald Ducksworth feels that Gordon shouldn’t try so hard to go for the win all the time and feels he needs to learn about fair play. Later that night, Gordon ends up being pulled over and arrested for a DUI and is later sentenced to 500 hours of community service rather than facing going to jail thanks to Mr. Ducksworth’s intervention. Unfortunately for Gordon, he finds that he will have to coach a Pee Wee hockey team known only as District Five. Gordon strongly dislikes hockey because he has a sad history with the sport. As a child, he used to rule at the game until he ended up costing his team, The Hawks, a game winning penalty shot, which caused them to lose the championship for the first time in their history, and only a month after Gordon lost his loving father. He also lost the respect of his overly competitive coach Jack Reilly. When Gordon goes to meet the team, he finds that they have little to no skills for the sport. They cannot skate, score, win, and they can’t even afford proper hockey equipment to play with. After losing their first few games, Gordon seeks advice from an old friend and mentor, Hans, who inspires him to rediscover his love for the game and to help the team do better. After they manage to recruit a few new players and Gordon teaches them how to play the game properly, they end up renaming themselves The Mighty Ducks and start playing better and finally winning, eventually making it to the play-offs and finally make their way to the championship game against Coach Reilly and the Hawks. The main cast of the film consists of Joss Ackland as Hans, Heidi Kling as Casey Conway, Lane Smith as Coach Jack Reilly, Josef Sommer as Gerald Ducksworth, and M. C. Gainey as Lewis. The film also features cameo appearances by real life NHL players Mike Modano and Basil McRae. Then we come to the cast of children who play the Mighty Ducks team; Joshua Jackson as #96 Charlie Conway; Elden Ratliff Henson as #44 Fulton Reed; Shaun Weiss as #33 Greg Goldberg the Goalie; Matt Doherty as #4 Lester “Les” Averman; Garette Ratliff Henson as #00 Guy Germaine; Marguerite Moreau as #18 Connie Moreau; Vincent A. Larusso as #99 Adam Banks; Brandon Quintin Adams as #9 Jesse Hall; Jussie Smollett as #1 Terry Hall; Aaron Schwartz as #11 Dave Karp; J. D. Daniels as #24 Peter Mark; Jane Plank as #5 Tammy Duncan, and Danny Tamberelli as #2 Tommy Duncan. This film would go on to become a major hit at the box office and is often looked at as a staple for kids who grew up in the 1990s. I know this movie made me a fan of hockey and also introduced me to the music of Queen. I give this film a solid 10 out of ten. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review M B One of my favorite movies! It is honestly great. Out of the movie series the first one is the best. The movie displays challenges and decent character development. I must have seen this movie 100 times and it still keeps me laughing and entertained. There is a bit of language and jokes, so if you don't want young kids exposed to that. Wait until at least 11. A definite must to show your kids and family.
