Robert E. Sherwood LIFE Miss Lulu Bett is an altogether admirable piece of work. In adapting Zona Gale's novel to the screen, Mr. DeMille has shown a vast amount of good taste, and, more than that, of good sense. Oct 6, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick M Miss Lulu Bett lives a life of servitude in her own sister's house. Her brother-in-law bullies and belittles her, working to keep her feeling indebted to him so she'll cook his meals, clean his house, and absorb his emotional abuse. After a chance at another life presents itself but is cruelly snatched away, she must summon the courage to stoke her self-confidence or sink back into the dreary drudgery of her former existence. I wasn't certain what to make of this picture for the first two thirds of it. Not terribly much stands out about the direction, the performances are good but the characters aren't fleshed out as well as they might be, and there isn't anything novel about the artistry or cinematography. However, seeing actress Lois Wilson seize the reins of her character and give her bullying brother-in-law what he had coming to him was well worth the price of admission. Love seeing people discover their voice! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Audience Member good silent directed by Cecil B DeMille's brother William.
