Audience Member 7.1/10, my review: http://wp.me/p1eXom-24L Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member this battle of the sexes pic s/b 1951 not 1952 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A somewhat neglected high point in early 50's European cinema, 'Froken Julie' has some of the finest flashback sequences ever put on film and I suspect that these were a big influence on John Sayles's 'Lone Star', made 50 years later in a very similar style. The cinematography is very typically Swedish, shot in high contrast with lots of natural lighting but also with some beautiful Welles-ian setpieces where the camera weaves dramatically in and around the actors, and lots of deep-focus shots. Swedish cinema is best known perhaps for Ingmar Bergman but this is a bravura melodrama predating his work that is highly unique and well worth investigating. It features Max Von Sydow in a minor, early role and also won the Palme d'Or in '51. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the greatest plays ever is given competent, at times inspired cinematic treatment. Miss Julie was of course written (1888) by Sweden's August Strindberg, who along with Norwegian Henrik Ibsen, revived the debased Art of the Drama. Director Alf Sjoberg does his best (with somewhat primitive production values at his command, Sweden, 1951) to convert this into a movie, not just a filmed stage play. I think he could have found better leads to cast, that's what holds this back most. Still--much recommended! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Classic well played Strindberg drama with a very young Max von Sydow. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review James B it creates an interesting interplay between filmic and stage elements, while harboring a very powerful psychosexuality (especially for its time). an interesting film.
