Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter The central character isn't complex enough to hold our interest. Mar 21, 2002 Full Review Andrew Sarris Observer Call it magic realism or surrealism, but Miss Wonton floats beyond reality with a certain degree of wit and dignity. Mar 13, 2002 Full Review John Anderson Newsday Suggests puns about ingredients and soup and somebody being off their noodle, but let's just say the ingredients don't quite add up to a meal. Rated: 2/4 Mar 8, 2002 Full Review Kim Williamson Boxoffice Magazine Its story about a young Chinese woman, Ah Na, who has come to New York City to replace past tragedy with the American Dream is one that any art-house moviegoer is likely to find compelling. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 17, 2002 Full Review Ken Fox TV Guide Ong's promising debut is a warm and well-told tale of one recent Chinese immigrant's experiences in New York City. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 7, 2002 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International Most consumers of lo mein and General Tso's chicken barely give a thought to the folks who prepare and deliver it, so, hopefully, this film will attach a human face to all those little steaming cartons. Audience Member Miss Wonton is a timeless achievement in capturing the very real challenges of the American dream. The personal battle of being torn between fantastical space and realism, and between two contrasting cultures remained evident through the film with the brilliant play of colours and symbolism, deeply embedded into each scene. The reality is that almost 20 years on, the story of Miss Wonton and the immigrant's story remains as culturally significant as ever— and this film wonderfully does justice to that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Simple story of a Chinese girl's attempt to find the American Dream. Some subtle twists and turns. Worth a watch.
